Chapter 4 - The Boardroom War

At ten o'clock the following morning, the high-rise conference room of Caruso Enterprises was packed with thirty men in dark suits.
These were not street thugs; these were bankers, union presidents, shipping magnates, and senior capos who controlled the flow of illicit money from Detroit to Minneapolis. At the head of the long mahogany table sat Vincent Caruso, looking immaculately tailored in a charcoal suit.
Beside him, sitting in an executive leather chair with an iPad and a thick stack of financial ledgers, was Naomi Vale.
She wore a sharp black tailored blazer, her hair pulled into a sleek ponytail, looking every bit the ruthless forensic auditor she was trained to be.
The room was buzzing with tension. Across the table, Julian Caruso sat with his jaw clenched, his hands folded tightly over a leather folder. Beside him sat Anthony Moretti—Victoria’s father—a silver-haired mob patriarch with cold blue eyes and forty years of violence behind him.
“This is an insult, Vincent!” Moretti barked, slamming his palm on the table. “You parade this... this catering girl into our executive board meeting after publicly humiliating my daughter in front of the entire city?!”
The room went dead silent. Several capos shifted uncomfortably in their seats.
Vincent didn't raise his voice. He took a sip of his black coffee, set the cup down, and gestured casually toward Naomi.
“Miss Vale,” Vincent said smoothly. “Explain page four to Mr. Moretti.”
Naomi tapped her iPad, sending a high-resolution spreadsheet directly to the giant digital screens on the conference room walls.
“Page four details the shipping logs for Berth 14 at the East Chicago Port Authority,” Naomi announced, her voice calm, clear, and ringing with absolute authority. “Over the last eighteen months, thirty-four cargo containers marked ‘machinery parts’ were cleared through Mr. Moretti’s private customs lane without paying the standard ten percent Syndicate tariff.”
Moretti’s face flushed deep crimson. “That’s standard port management! We defer tariffs for capital equipment!”
“Not when the machinery parts inside those containers are sold three days later to a buyer in Montreal for eighty-five million dollars in untraceable cryptocurrency,” Naomi countered without missing a beat.
She flipped to the next slide.
“The cryptocurrency was routed through three shell entities registered in the Cayman Islands,” Naomi continued, her eyes locking onto Julian’s pale face. “Entities held under the maiden name of Victoria Moretti-Caruso. Authorized by a digital signature belonging to Julian Caruso.”
Gasps echoed around the table. Two senior capos sitting near Julian immediately slid their chairs back, creating space between themselves and the younger Caruso brother.
Julian stood up abruptly, pointing an trembling finger at Naomi. “She’s lying! She’s a street temp Vincent picked up off a floor to fabricate evidence against me!”
“The bank records were verified two hours ago by the Chase Manhattan Fraud division,” Naomi said coldly, looking Julian dead in the eye. “Unless you’d like me to project the signed wire receipts onto the wall, Mr. Caruso?”
Vincent leaned back in his chair, a slow, terrifying smile spreading across his face. He looked at Moretti, whose hands were now trembling with suppressed rage.
“My brother and your daughter didn't just sleep together, Anthony,” Vincent said, his tone droping into a whisper that chilled the air in the room. “They stole eighty-five million dollars of Syndicate money from under your nose... and tried to blame it on a port audit.”
Moretti turned his head slowly, glaring at Julian with eyes full of absolute venom. “Julian... is this true?”
Julian stumbled over his words. “Father-in-law, listen to me—it wasn't like that—Vincent is setting us up—”

“Silence!” Moretti roared, standing up so fast his chair flipped backward onto the carpet. He looked at Vincent, his chest heaving. “The Moretti family had no knowledge of this theft. Victoria will be returned to my house immediately. She will surrender all legal claims to the Caruso estate.”
“She’s already surrendered them,” Vincent said flatly. He gestured toward Marco standing by the door. “Escort Mr. Moretti to his car. Julian stays.”
