Chapter 7 - The Federal Trap

The operation began at four o'clock on Thursday morning inside a private hangar at O’Hare International Airport.
Outside, rain lashed against the metal roof as a sleek black Gulfstream jet idled on the tarmac, its engines humming softly in the darkness.
Inside the hangar, Naomi sat at a mobile satellite workstation, surrounded by five military-grade encryption servers provided by Vincent’s private security network. She wore a black tactical sweater, her hair pulled back tightly, her eyes fixed on three glowing monitors displaying the live mainframe of the Federal Reserve Bank of New York.
Vincent stood behind her, wearing a dark leather jacket, a blued-steel pistol holstered beneath his arm, watching the digital countdown clock on the central screen.
“Three minutes until the federal wire clearing window opens,” Naomi announced, her fingers hovering over her mechanical keyboard. “Once I initiate the reversal script, the Department of Justice’s escrow account will freeze for forty-eight hours for automated audit verification.”
“Will that give us enough time?” Marco asked, checking the magazine of his rifle.
“It will force the account holders to enter their override codes manually,” Naomi explained calmly. “And the moment Dominic Caruso types his master password into a terminal in Zurich... I will hijack his IP address and broadcast his live GPS coordinates directly to every news outlet and international law enforcement agency in Western Europe.”
Vincent reached down, resting his hand gently on Naomi’s shoulder. “You’re exposing the most powerful federal witness protection fraud in American history, Naomi. If the DOJ realizes what you’re doing, they’ll send federal marshals here within ten minutes.”
Naomi turned her head, looking up into his eyes. “My mother’s flight to Vermont landed two hours ago. She’s safe in the sanctuary house. I have nothing left to lose, Vincent.”
Vincent stared down at her, feeling a strange, powerful warmth bloom in his chest—a feeling he had thought died years ago inside the cold violence of his world. She wasn't just his auditor. She was his equal.
“One minute,” Naomi warned.
Suddenly, the heavy metal doors of the hangar were blown inward with a deafening bang.
Flashbang grenades detonated across the concrete floor, filling the air with blinding white light and earsplitting thunder.
“FBI! On the ground! Nobody move!” shouted dozens of tactical officers dressed in black body armor, flooding into the hangar with assault rifles raised.
Marco and the security team drew their weapons, but Vincent held up a single, firm hand.
“Stand down!” Vincent ordered his men loudly.
Through the clearing smoke walked a tall man in an expensive wool overcoat, holding a brass-handled walking stick. He was in his late sixties, with silver hair, dark eyes identical to Vincent’s, and a cruel, triumphant smile stretching across his face.
Dominic Caruso.

Beside him walked Agent Vance of the FBI Internal Affairs Division.
“Hello, son,” Dominic said smoothly, his voice echoing in the vast hangar. “You always were too smart for your own good.”
