Chapter 10 - The Harvest

Six months later.

The Napa Valley sun shone brightly over the lush green hills of the restored Bennett-Romano Vineyard. The charred fences had been replaced, the old stone house fully renovated, and the air smelled sweet with the rich scent of ripening grapes.

A grand celebration was taking place on the terrace overlooking the valley. Dozens of master sommeliers, international distributors, and friends had gathered to celebrate the grand reopening of the estate.

Sophie stood near the edge of the vineyard, dressed in a stunning white sundress, holding a glass of dark red wine.

She swirled the liquid gently, watching the legs cling to the crystal glass, before taking a slow, appreciative sip.

A pair of strong arms wrapped around her waist from behind, pulling her back against a broad, familiar chest.

"Well?" Dante whispered into her ear, pressing a soft kiss to her temple. "Does it taste like a lumberyard?"

Sophie laughed, a light, beautiful sound that echoed over the vines. She turned in his arms, resting her hands against the lapels of his light linen suit.

"It tastes like perfection," Sophie said, looking up into his warm grey eyes. "Perfect balance of oak, blackberry, and freedom."

Dante smiled—the soft, genuine smile that he reserved only for her. The dangerous mob boss who had once terrified Chicago was now standing beside her as a co-owner of one of the finest vineyards in the country, having transitioned much of his legitimate capital into agricultural technology and luxury exports under Sophie’s direction.

"I have a confession to make," Dante said, reaching into his pocket and pulling out a small, velvet box.

Sophie’s heart skipped a beat. "Another confession, Mr. Romano?"

Dante opened the box, revealing a magnificent ring featuring an uncut, deep red ruby surrounded by brilliant diamonds.

"Six months ago, when I caught you drinking my wine," Dante said softly, his voice thick with emotion, "I didn't ask you 'Enjoying it?' because I was angry."

Sophie blinked, surprised. "Why did you ask?"

"Because," Dante said, stepping down on one knee onto the rich brown soil of the vineyard, "from the moment I saw you standing in my study, holding that glass with such passion and fire, I knew my life would never be the same. You saved me from my own dark world, Sophie."

He looked up at her, his eyes shining with absolute devotion. "Sophie Bennett, will you do me the honor of becoming my wife, my partner, and the queen of my heart?"

Tears of pure joy welled in Sophie’s eyes. She didn't hesitate for a single second.

"Yes," she whispered, stepping forward as he slid the ring onto her finger. "Yes, Dante! Absolutely yes!"

Dante stood up, pulling her into his arms and lifting her slightly off her feet as he kissed her deeply, surrounded by the sunlit vines of her home.

The crowd on the terrace erupted into applause and cheers, raising their glasses in a toast to the maid who had stolen a taste of expensive wine—and ended up winning the heart of the most powerful man in the world.
