Chapter 7 - The Gala of Deception

The ballroom of the Grand Hotel was a spectacle of blinding opulence. Crystal chandeliers hung from vaulted ceilings, casting shimmering light over hundreds of Chicago’s wealthiest elites, politicians, and high-society figures.

At the center of it all was Victor Falcone—an elderly, silver-haired man with a ruthless smile and the eyes of a shark. He moved through the crowd like a king, accepting congratulations on his latest business expansion.

Suddenly, the heavy double doors of the ballroom swung open.

A collective hush fell over the room.

Dante Romano walked in. He looked impossibly handsome in a bespoke black tuxedo, his presence commanding immediate attention. But it was not Dante who made the room hold its breath.

It was the woman on his arm.

Sophie Bennett was stunning. She wore a floor-length crimson silk gown that hugged every curve of her figure, leaving her shoulders bare. Her dark hair was styled in elegant vintage waves, and a diamond necklace—a Romano heirloom—sparkled at her throat. She carried herself with the effortless poise of nobility, her head held high.

Victor Falcone’s smile instantly froze. His eyes locked onto Sophie, recognition and shock flashing across his aged face.

"Dante," Victor said smoothly, stepping forward to intercept them as the crowd watched in breathless anticipation. "I didn't expect you to grace us with your presence tonight. I don't recall sending an invitation."

"You know me, Victor," Dante said smoothly, his hand resting possessively on the small of Sophie’s back. "I never miss an opportunity to celebrate a fellow businessman's... achievements."

Victor turned his cold gaze to Sophie. "And who is your lovely companion? She looks remarkably familiar."

Sophie met Victor’s gaze without flinching. The memory of this man standing on her father’s vineyard, signing away her family’s legacy, burned in her mind.

"I should look familiar, Mr. Falcone," Sophie said, her voice carrying clearly across the quieted ballroom. "I am Sophie Bennett. Julian Bennett’s daughter."

Murmurs rippled through the crowd. Many of the older investors in the room remembered Julian Bennett and the scandalous bankruptcy that had allowed Falcone to seize his assets.

Victor’s jaw tightened, but he maintained his polite mask. "Ah, yes. Little Sophie. I was saddened to hear of your father’s passing. It’s a shame you ran away after selling his lands."

"I didn't run," Sophie replied calmly, taking a glass of champagne from a passing waiter’s tray. "I was surviving while you looted my family's heritage. But I see you've used those stolen assets to build your new luxury export brand."

Victor’s eyes flashed with anger. "Careful, young lady. Accusations without proof in a room full of esteemed guests can ruin a reputation."

"Oh, I don't need accusations, Victor," Dante chimed in, his voice ringing with dark authority. "We have proof."

Dante gestured to the grand display in the center of the ballroom—a pyramid of Falcone’s flagship product, a ultra-premium olive oil and wine selection priced at thousands of dollars per unit.

"Shall we give the investors a live demonstration of your quality, Victor?" Sophie asked sweetness dripping from her voice.

Before Victor could react, Sophie stepped toward the display, picking up a bottle of Falcone’s top-tier reserve wine—the very wine he claimed was harvested from the former Bennett estate.

She uncorked it with effortless skill, pouring a small amount into a crystal glass.

"This wine is marketed as a 2015 reserve from the Napa Valley," Sophie announced to the surrounding crowd of high-net-worth investors. "A legendary year. However..."

She brought the glass to her nose, then held it up to the light.

"The color density indicates a forced aging process using synthetic tannins. And the aroma..." She took a tiny sip, her expression shifting to one of expert disgust. "The aroma reveals a heavy addition of cheap plum concentrate to mask a ruined fermentation cycle. This isn't a vintage, ladies and gentlemen. It's industrial waste bottled in cheap glass."

Gasps erupted from the crowd. Several major investors immediately began whispering frantically to one another.

"She’s lying!" Victor snapped, dropping his polite facade. "She's a bitter girl trying to ruin my reputation!"

"Is she?" Dante said, taking a step closer to Victor, his towering frame casting a long shadow over the older man. "Because my lab tested three crates of your imported stock yesterday, Victor. The results, along with the chemical analysis signed by certified international inspectors, have just been delivered to the Federal Trade Commission and the State Attorney’s office."

Victor’s face turned deathly pale.

"You're finished, Victor," Dante whispered so only Falcone could hear. "Your investors will pull out by midnight. Your assets will be frozen by morning. And if you ever come near Sophie again, I won't bother sending the federal authorities—I will handle you myself."
