Chapter 8 - The Price of Revenge

The chaos that broke out at the gala was immediate and devastating for the Falcone empire. Investors swarmed Victor, demanding answers, while news reporters—alerted by Marco hours earlier—flooded the lobby with cameras flashing.

Dante smoothly escorted Sophie out through a side entrance, where their armored vehicle was waiting.

Inside the quiet safety of the SUV, Sophie collapsed back against the leather seat, her heart pounding violently. The adrenaline that had carried her through the performance was slowly draining, leaving her exhausted but exhilarated.

"You were magnificent," Dante said, looking at her with an intensity that made her cheeks flush.

"I can't believe I just did that," Sophie whispered, looking down at her hands, which were trembling slightly. "I just exposed one of the most dangerous men in the city in front of two hundred people."

"You took back what was stolen from you," Dante said, reaching over to take her hand in his. "You gave your father his dignity back tonight."

Tears pricked at the corners of Sophie’s eyes. For three long, agonizing years, she had carried the shame of her family's downfall, feeling weak and defeated. Tonight, she had used her knowledge, her talent, and her strength to tear down the man who had destroyed her life.

"Thank you, Dante," she said softly, looking into his dark eyes. "I couldn't have done it without you."

"You don't ever have to thank me, Sophie," Dante replied, his voice rough with emotion. "You gave me something far more valuable. You gave me a reason to fight for something other than power."

He leaned in, cupping her face gently, and pulled her into a slow, deep kiss. It wasn't like the desperate, frantic kiss in the study during the gunfight. This was tender, intense, and filled with a silent promise.

When they pulled apart, the car had pulled up to the Lake Geneva house.

Marco opened the door, a wide grin on his face. "Boss, news just broke. Three of Falcone’s major financial backers have pulled their funding. His stock is plummeting."

"Good," Dante said, stepping out and extending his hand to Sophie. "Tell the men to keep the perimeter on high alert. Falcone is a wounded animal now. He will be desperate."

They walked up to the master suite in silence. The heavy weight of the ongoing conflict still hung over them, but the bond between them had become unbreakable.

Sophie stood near the fireplace in the bedroom, unfastening the diamond necklace from her throat. Dante walked up behind her, taking the necklace from her fingers and placing it on the vanity table.

His hands rested on her bare shoulders, his thumbs softly massaging the tension from her muscles.

"Are you afraid?" Dante asked softly into her ear.

Sophie turned around in his arms, resting her hands against his broad chest, feeling the steady, strong beat of his heart.

"I was afraid when I was hiding," she said honestly. "When I was alone. But standing beside you... I'm not afraid of anything."

Dante looked down at her, his grey eyes burning with an undeniable flame. "Sophie..."

She reached up, wrapping her arms around his neck, and pulled him down into another kiss, surrendering completely to the passion that had been building between them since that very first sip of wine.
