Chapter 4 - The 8:00 AM Execution

By seven-thirty the following morning, the sun was rising bright and blinding over downtown Phoenix, casting long, razor-sharp shadows across the glass facade of the Maricopa County Superior Courthouse.

I sat in a private, leather-upholstered conference room on the fifth floor, dressed in a tailored navy maternity suit with a crisp white silk blouse. My hair was styled in a low, elegant chignon, and a simple silver pendant—a gift from my grandmother—hung around my neck.

Beside me sat Abigail Vance-Cross, reviewing three thick stacks of legal filings. Opposite us sat Detective Robert Miller of the Phoenix Police Department's Special Victims Unit, accompanied by an Assistant District Attorney named Karen Albright.

"The medical records from St. Joseph's are comprehensive, Mrs. Carter," ADA Albright said, turning a page in her folder. "Dr. Vasquez's forensic documentation of the blunt force trauma to your flank, combined with the roadside witness testimony from the bystander who called 911, gives us a rock-solid foundation for felony domestic battery under ARS 13-1204."

"What about the text message?" I asked, my voice calm, precise, and steady.

"The screenshot and the associated cloud metadata sent from his phone at 10:42 p.m. establish clear malice, lack of remorse, and an attempt to intimidate the victim," Detective Miller added, his jaw set in a hard line. "Judge Davis signed the arrest warrant fifteen minutes ago. SVU officers are en route to his office at Apex Global right now."

I checked my watch.

7:45 AM.

"He won't be at his office yet," I said softly. "Garrick always arrives at Apex Global at precisely 8:15 AM to prepare for his Friday morning acquisitions briefing."

"Then we will meet him in the lobby," Detective Miller said, standing up and buttoning his jacket.

Abigail picked up her secure tablet, tapping the screen to initiate a three-way conference call.

"The financial freeze orders have been digitally served to Chase Bank, Wells Fargo, and Apex Global's payroll department as of 8:00 AM sharp," Abigail informed me, a cold, dark satisfaction in her tone. "Garrick's corporate credit card was declined four minutes ago when he attempted to pay for an Uber ride from the impound lot back to Paradise Valley."

I raised an eyebrow. "He took an Uber?"

"He had to borrow forty dollars in cash from his mistress," Abigail laughed softly. "And speaking of the Paradise Valley estate... County Marshals are currently placing the court-ordered eviction notice on the front entrance. Miss Vanessa Reed is currently being escorted off the premises in her pajamas."

I stood up slowly, adjusting the drape of my navy jacket over my stomach.

"Let's go to Apex Global," I said. "I'd like to see my husband's morning briefing."

At 8:10 AM, the glass atrium lobby of Apex Global Tower in downtown Phoenix was buzzing with morning activity. Hundreds of corporate executives, financial analysts, and administrative staff were passing through the security turnstiles, holding coffee cups and checking their smartphones.

At 8:12 AM, the automatic sliding glass doors opened.

Garrick Carter walked into the lobby.

He looked unhinged. His eyes were bloodshot, his hair uncombed, and his white button-down shirt wrinkled from spending four hours sitting in the waiting area of a commercial impound yard. He was clutching a cold paper coffee cup, his jaw working frantically as he marched toward the executive elevators.

Beside the turnstiles stood Richard Sterling, the Chief Executive Officer of Apex Global—a towering man in his fifties with iron-gray hair, surrounded by four senior board members.

"Garrick!" Richard called out, his voice sharp and uninviting. "Where the hell have you been?! The acquisition board meeting starts in eight minutes! Why isn't your deck uploaded to the server?"

Garrick stopped, trying frantically to pull his composure together, smoothing his rumpled jacket with trembling hands. "Richard! Sir! I apologize... I had a minor domestic emergency this morning. My wife... she had a mental episode, locked my vehicle access, and—"

"Garrick Vance Carter?" a deep, loud voice echoed across the quiet lobby.

Every head in the atrium turned.

Detective Miller and three uniformed Phoenix police officers walked smoothly across the marble floor, stopping three feet in front of Garrick.

Garrick blinked, his face turning pale. "What... what is this? I'm in the middle of a corporate meeting!"

"Garrick Carter, you are under arrest for Class 3 Felony Aggravated Domestic Battery," Detective Miller announced loudly, his voice carrying clearly to every floor overlooking the open atrium.

Gasps erupted from the crowd of employees gathered along the mezzanine balconies.

"What?!" Garrick shrieked, backing away toward the security desk. "Are you insane?! I didn't touch anyone! This is a mistake! Call my lawyer!"

"You have the right to remain silent," Officer Torres recited calmly, grabbing Garrick's right arm and twisting it behind his back with practiced efficiency. The metallic click-clack of handcuffs locking around his wrists echoed through the high-ceilinged room.

"Richard!" Garrick screamed, twisting around in the officers' grip, his eyes wild with terror as he looked at the CEO. "Richard, help me! This is my wife! She's hysterical! She's trying to ruin my promotion!"

The glass entrance doors slid open once more.

I walked into the lobby.

I walked slowly, elegantly, my head held high, accompanied by Abigail Cross and two senior partners from our legal firm.

The crowd of employees parted instantly, making a wide path for me as I walked up to the police circle.

Garrick stared at me, his mouth opening and closing like a fish out of water. "Evelyn... Evelyn, tell them! Tell them it was an accident! Tell them you fell on the highway!"

I stopped two feet in front of him.

I didn't yell. I didn't cry. I looked at him with a quiet, freezing disdain that made the air in the lobby feel ten degrees colder.

"You told me last night that I was bad luck, Garrick," I said softly, my voice carrying cleanly across the silent atrium. "You told me you wouldn't let me ruin your car—or your life."

I stepped closer, leaning down slightly so only he could hear my next words.

"The car was towed at midnight. The house was seized at seven AM. The bank accounts were frozen at eight. And your employment at Apex Global..."

I turned my eyes toward Richard Sterling.

The CEO walked forward, holding a legal document that Abigail had delivered to his office at seven-thirty that morning.

"Garrick Carter," Richard said, his tone devoid of a single drop of warmth. "As of eight-fifteen this morning, you are terminated from your position at Apex Global for gross moral turpitude and violation of corporate executive ethics. Security will clear your personal desk into a box and deliver it to the county jail."

May you like

"No!" Garrick howled, his voice breaking into a pathetic, sob as the officers began turning him toward the exit doors. "No! Richard, please! Evelyn! Evelyn, I'm sorry! I'm sorry! Please don't do this!"

I turned my back on him as the police officers marched him out through the glass doors, into the blinding desert sunlight where three television news vans—tipped off by my PR team thirty minutes prior—were already waiting with cameras flashing.
