Chapter 7 - The Arrival of Clara Evelyn

Two weeks later, on a quiet Sunday evening at three AM, Clara Evelyn Vance entered the world.
The delivery was smooth, peaceful, and held in the private maternity suite at St. Joseph’s, surrounded by Dr. Vasquez, my sister, and Abigail.
When the nurse laid her seven-pound, four-ounce body onto my chest, the entire universe contracted down to the sound of her soft, snuffling breaths against my skin.
She had a head of thick, dark hair, big blue eyes that blinked curiosity at the warm room lights, and tiny, perfect hands that immediately clutched onto my thumb with surprising strength.
Dr. Vasquez stood beside my bed, wiping a tear from her cheek as she checked Clara's vitals.
"She's absolute perfection, Evelyn," Sarah whispered gently. "Apgar score is a solid ten. A strong, resilient girl."
I leaned down, pressing my lips against Clara's soft forehead, smelling the sweet, clean scent of baby powder and fresh life.
"You're safe now, my darling," I whispered into her soft hair. "You will never have to listen to anyone tell you where you belong. You own the world."
The door to the private suite clicked open, and Ethan Vance stepped inside, wearing a dark suit, holding a massive bouquet of yellow roses—my grandmother's favorite flowers.
He set the flowers on the table, walked softly over to the side of my bed, and looked down at the tiny baby resting against my chest.
For the first time in thirty years, I saw a tear glint in the corner of the hardened veteran's eye.
"She looks just like her great-grandmother, Evie," Ethan murmured, his voice thick with emotion as he gently touched Clara's tiny hand with his weathered pinky finger.

"Her name is Clara," I said softly, looking up at him. "Clara Evelyn Vance."
Ethan nodded slowly, his chin trembling slightly. "A fine name. A proper Vance name."
