Chapter 10 - The Sovereign Heart

Six months later.
The spring sun was bright and warm over the rolling green lawns of the estate in Upper Westchester.
The air was filled with the scent of blooming lilacs, fresh jasmine, and ocean air blowing off the coast.
Two hundred guests were gathered under a massive white silk canopy set up on the south lawn. But unlike the grand, artificial spectacle at the Belmont Hotel months ago, this gathering was different.
There were no corporate alliances being traded. There were no financial trust documents waiting for midnight signatures.
Sitting in the front row was Mary Brooks from Ohio, wearing a dusty rose dress, smiling through tears beside Margaret Vale, who looked healthier and vibrant in her wheelchair.
Near the flower-covered altar stood Dominic Morelli.
He wore a dark blue tuxedo, his shoulders broad, his face calm, his dark eyes fixed entirely on the path leading down from the main house.
The music shifted into a deep, resonant cello melody.
Elena stepped onto the carpeted aisle.
She wore a gown of breathtaking ivory silk, designed specifically for her by Madame Valentina. It didn't try to hide her curves; it celebrated them. The fitted corset waist, off-the-shoulder lace sleeves, and sweeping train made her look like a goddess carved from marble and grace.
She walked down the aisle alone, her head held high, a radiant, confident smile illuminating her face.
When she reached the altar, Dominic didn't wait for the officiant to prompt him. He stepped forward, taking both of her hands in his, pressing his lips firmly against her knuckles.
"You took your time," he murmured softly, a dark gleam of happiness in his eyes.
"I had to make sure the dress fit," Elena whispered back, her hazel eyes dancing with warmth.
The officiant smiled, opening the leather book in his hands. "We are gathered here today to unite two hearts, bound not by contract or convenience, but by choice, respect, and unyielding love."
When it came time for the vows, Dominic looked directly into Elena’s eyes, ignoring the printed card in his hand.
"Elena," he said, his voice deep, resonant, and carrying clearly across the quiet lawn. "I spent my life believing that strength was built on fear, contracts, and power. The night I met you, you showed me that true strength is built on grace, dignity, and the courage to remain kind in a cruel world."
He slid a simple, heavy band of platinum and diamonds onto her finger.
"I give you my name, my home, my protection, and my heart," Dominic promised. "For as long as we both shall live."
Elena looked at the ring on her finger, then up into the eyes of the man who had torn down an empire just to stand beside her.
"Dominic," she said softly, her voice steady and clear. "You protected me when I was invisible. You saw me when I felt small. I give you my love, my loyalty, and my hand... not because you built a fortress for me, but because you showed me I already had the strength to stand inside it."
She slid his platinum band onto his broad finger.
"By the power vested in me," the officiant announced, "I now pronounce you husband and wife. Mr. Morelli, you may kiss your bride."
Dominic didn't hesitate. He pulled Elena gently into his arms, his strong hands resting against her waist, and lifted her slightly as he brought his lips down onto hers in a deep, passionate kiss that sealed their future forever.
The crowd erupted into cheers—loud, genuine, and joyful.
As they walked back down the aisle together, hand in hand under the bright spring sun, Elena looked out at the faces of the people around them.
She was no longer the girl hiding in the shadows of a fitting room. She was no longer the nurse trying to survive three hours in a ballroom of strangers.

She was Elena Morelli.
And she was home.
