Chapter 8 - The Queen of Brooklyn

Every eye in the grand foyer turned upward.

There were no whispers of "brave." There were no cruel chuckles about fabric, no polite snickers near the champagne tower.

The room held its breath.

Elena descended the stairs slowly, her hand resting on the polished mahogany railing, the midnight-blue silk of her dress shifting around her full hips like dark water. The sapphire at her throat caught the light of the crystal chandeliers, casting deep blue reflections across her glowing skin.

Dominic didn't move. He stood at the bottom of the stairs, his dark eyes fixed on her, his glass remaining completely forgotten in his hand.

When she reached the final step, he offered her his hand.

"You look breathtaking," he murmured, his voice low enough that only she could hear.

"I feel... terrifyingly visible," Elena admitted honestly, her hand trembling slightly as she took his.

"Good," Dominic said, pulling her hand up to press a soft, lingering kiss against her knuckles. "Everyone in this room should know what they're looking at."

In the center of the crowd stood Richard Vale, his face pale and drawn, accompanied by a small legal team. Victoria was absent—confined to their Westchester estate to avoid further public disgrace.

Dominic walked Elena into the center of the grand ballroom, the crowd parting like the Red Sea before them.

"Richard," Dominic addressed the older man calmly.

Richard Vale stepped forward, clearing his throat nervously. "Dominic. Miss Brooks."

"I believe you have something to say to Miss Brooks," Dominic said, his dark eyes locking onto the older man with lethal intensity.

Richard swallowed hard, looking at Elena. Under the gaze of two hundred influential guests, the proud head of Vale Development bowed his head slightly.

"Miss Brooks," Richard said, his voice strained but loud enough for the entire room to hear. "On behalf of the Vale family, I offer my deepest and most sincere apologies for the disgraceful behavior of my daughter at the Belmont Hotel. Her words were unexcused, uncouth, and entirely false. You carried yourself with absolute dignity, and we regret the distress caused to you."

Silence hung in the air for three long seconds.

Elena looked at Richard Vale, then at the crowded ballroom of people who had spent days gossiping about her body and her background.

"Thank you, Mr. Vale," Elena said, her voice clear, calm, and perfectly poised. "Apology accepted. I hope your daughter finds the peace she clearly lacks."

A subtle wave of admiration rippled through the room. She hadn't gloated. She hadn't thrown a tantrum. She had accepted the apology with the quiet, unshakeable grace of a woman who knew her worth was never dependent on their opinion in the first place.

Dominic smiled—a real, rare, striking smile that transformed his entire dark face.

"Now," Dominic announced to the room, raising his glass. "Enjoy the evening."
