Chapter 5 - The Unseen Watcher

Adrien Kovar had not forgotten the woman with the terrifyingly shattered eyes.

In his world—a world of high-stakes criminal syndicates, backroom political maneuvering, and absolute power—weakness was usually something to be exploited. But the fear he had seen in Ara Voss eight months ago at the gala was not the normal nervousness of a civilian.

It was the hyper-vigilant terror of a survivor.

Adrien sat in the rear leather seat of his armored Maybach, staring up at the second-floor windows of the Voss brownstone. The heavy rain pattered against the tinted glass, casting distorted streams of water across his shadowed face.

Beside him sat Nikolai, his chief of security and most trusted lieutenant—a burly, scarred man who had served with Adrien for fifteen years.

"Boss," Nikolai spoke softly, adjusting his tablet screen. "The wiretap on Graham Voss’s personal line lit up two hours ago. He contacted his legal team to freeze the bank accounts of a woman named Tessa Miller. He also placed a call to a private security firm to install new smart locks on the brownstone's doors tonight."

Adrien’s slate-gray eyes didn't move from the lit window. "He caught her."

"Appears so," Nikolai nodded grimly. "Our team tracking the wife's burner phone confirmed the signal went dead thirty minutes ago. She was trying to run. He cut off her escape."

Adrien took a slow breath, his fingers tapping a slow, rhythmic pattern against the leather armrest.

For six months, Adrien had kept a low-profile surveillance detail on Graham Voss. Initially, it was business—Voss’s venture capital firm was attempting to buy up commercial real estate in an industrial district that served as a front for Adrien’s logistics networks. But as the intelligence files on Graham Voss grew, Adrien began noticing the anomalies in the domestic reports.

No social life for the wife. No independent bank accounts. A complete absence of public appearances except when strictly required by Voss’s corporate PR team. And then, the flinch at the gala.

Adrien knew violence. He knew how men used physical force to dominate others. But he also knew the more sinister, insidious violence of men who broke their victims silently, leaving no marks for the authorities to find.

"Voss thinks he's a master strategist," Adrien said, his voice dropping into a low, icy timbre. "He thinks he's playing a grand game of chess with a woman who has no pieces left on the board."

"Do we intervene, boss?" Nikolai asked, his hand resting near his sidearm. "It's domestic. If we step in directly, it could compromise our commercial operations with the district council."

Adrien turned his head, looking at Nikolai with an expression so cold it made the hardened lieutenant hold his breath.

"I don't care about the district council, Nikolai," Adrien said softly. "A man who hunts defenseless creatures inside his own home is not a man. He is a parasite."

Adrien reached into his coat pocket and pulled out a sleek, customized black satellite phone. He dialed a direct line.

"Marcus," Adrien commanded into the receiver the moment the call connected. "Initiate the takeover of Voss Capital. Buy up every line of debt his firm owes to the offshore syndicates by midnight. I want his financial throat in my hands by morning."

"Consider it done, Mr. Kovar," the voice replied.

Adrien ended the call and looked back up at the illuminated window of the brownstone.

"She tried to run," Adrien murmured, a faint, dangerous shadow of a smile touching his lips. "That means she hasn't given up yet. She just needs someone to open the cage door."
