Chapter 7 - The Unanswered Question

Ara stared at the tall man standing in her master bedroom. The absurdity, terror, and surreal beauty of the moment collided in her mind, leaving her breathless.

"I can't just leave," Ara whispered, her eyes darting toward the open hallway. "You don't understand what he's like. He's powerful. He has lawyers, police contacts... he'll find me. He'll track me down no matter where I go."

"He has nothing," Adrien corrected her flatly. "As of twenty minutes ago, Graham Voss is bankrupted, under investigation by the federal exchange, and completely isolated. But more importantly, Mrs. Voss... he has no power over you unless you give it to him."

Before Ara could answer, the sharp sound of a sports car engine roaring up the driveway shattered the quiet evening. Tires screeched against the damp pavement outside.

Graham was back.

"He's here!" Ara gasped, her entire body locking up in sheer panic. "Oh God, he's here!"

Adrien didn't flinch. He didn't even look toward the window. He simply gestured to Nikolai, who nodded and stepped out into the hallway, standing at the top of the stairs like an immovable wall of iron.

Heavy, furious footsteps slammed through the broken front entrance downstairs.

"What the hell is this?!" Graham’s voice screamed from the foyer, echoing with wild, unhinged rage. "Who broke my door?! I'll have you all arrested! I'll—"

Graham’s voice abruptly cut off as he charged up the stairs and came face-to-face with Nikolai. Before Graham could process the sight of a armed security operative standing inside his home, Nikolai grabbed Graham by his expensive collar, dragged him up the remaining stairs, and threw him forcefully into the master bedroom floor.

Graham hit the hardwood with a loud thud, his expensive suit twisting, his hair disheveled.

"What is the meaning of this?!" Graham shrieked, scrambling up to his knees, his eyes wild with fury. "Ara! Who are these people?! What have you done?!"

Ara cowered further into the corner, shrinking away from Graham’s voice out of pure muscle memory.

Graham turned his head, his eyes locking onto Adrien Kovar standing in the center of the room. Recognition hit Graham like a physical blow. As a venture capitalist operating in the city, Graham knew exactly who Adrien Kovar was. Everyone in the high-stakes financial world knew the name Kovar—and the ruthless, absolute power it carried.

Graham’s unhinged rage instantly turned into a cold, terrifying shock.

"Mr... Mr. Kovar?" Graham stammered, his voice dropping two octaves as he struggled to regain his composure on the floor. "I... I don't understand. Why are you in my home? Why is my wife..."

Adrien didn't answer right away.

He slowly turned his head, looking down at Ara cowering in the dark corner. He took in the way she held her hands, the way her shoulders were hunched, the hollowed-out terror in her dark eyes, and the sheer, instinctual panic that Graham’s voice had triggered in her body.

Adrien walked slowly across the room, stopping directly in front of Graham.

He looked down at the venture capitalist sitting on the floor—a man who built his entire ego on crushing a woman who couldn't fight back.

Adrien didn't raise his voice. He didn't draw a weapon. His face remained a mask of cold, terrifying tranquility.

He looked back at Ara. Then down at Graham.

And then, Adrien asked the one question nobody had dared to ask Ara in six long years:

"Who made you afraid?"

The quiet, devastating weight of that single sentence hung in the heavy air of the bedroom like a falling blade.

Ara froze. The words echoed through her mind, shattering six years of internalized guilt, gaslighting, and self-doubt. Who made you afraid? Not Why are you nervous? Not Why are you being dramatic?

Adrien wasn't asking why she was broken. He was identifying the man who had broken her.

Graham’s face drained of every drop of color. He looked up at Adrien, then at Ara, realizing in one terrifying second that his psychological hold over his wife was being torn to shreds by a man he could never hope to control or manipulate.

Graham opened his mouth to lie, to spin his practiced narrative of a hysterical, mentally unstable wife.

"She... she has severe mental issues, Mr. Kovar!" Graham gasped out, his voice high and frantic. "She’s paranoid! I've been trying to help her for years! Ask anyone! She's—"

"I didn't ask for your medical opinion, Voss," Adrien cut him off, his voice dropping into a low, lethal register that made the room temperature seem to plunge ten degrees. "I asked a question."

Adrien looked back at Ara, his gray eyes softening slightly as he met her gaze.

"Tell me, Ara," Adrien said quietly, offering her a stage to reclaim her voice. "Who made you afraid?"

Ara looked at Graham sitting terrified on the floor. She looked at the man who had stolen six years of her life, stripped her of her friends, made her doubt her own sanity, and locked her in a marble cage.

For six years, she had stayed silent to survive.

Tonight, survival required a sound.

May you like

Ara lifted her chin, her breathing steadying, tears running down her cheeks—not of fear, but of pure, unadulterated rage.

"He did," Ara said, her voice clear, distinct, and echoing through the dark bedroom. "Graham did."
