Chapter 5 - The Seventeen-Day Map

By Day Eight, the trap was fully set, but Ava needed to ensure Grant did not suspect a thing before his thirty-sixth birthday party.

Grant’s birthday fell on a Saturday—nine days away. For months, he had been subtly pushing her to host a lavish dinner party at their home, inviting his senior partners from Briarstone Capital, his family, and his executive colleagues.

Ava had originally thought he wanted to celebrate his hard work. Now she understood the truth: Grant wanted a public stage. He planned to announce their "amicable separation" late in the evening, right after delivering a forged asset settlement agreement to Ava in private, using the presence of his corporate peers to pressure her into signing without calling a lawyer.

It was a brilliant, sociopathic tactical maneuver.

So Ava decided to give him an even bigger stage.

On Tuesday afternoon, Ava called Grant's managing director at Briarstone Capital, Arthur Pendelton—a stern, traditional sixty-two-year-old executive who valued corporate integrity and hated public scandals above all else.

"Arthur!" Ava said, her voice dripping with warm, enthusiastic excitement over the phone. "I’m calling to finalize the surprise details for Grant’s birthday party next Saturday!"

Arthur chuckled over the line. "Ah, Ava! Grant is a lucky man. He told us you were planning an intimate family dinner."

"Well, that’s what he thinks!" Ava laughed brightly. "I want to surprise him by making it an official Briarstone celebration! I’ve booked the private ballroom at the Grandview Club downtown. I’m inviting the entire board of directors, the senior partners, the regional compliance officers, and the media team from the Charlotte Business Journal!"

There was a brief pause on the line. "The compliance team and the press?" Arthur asked, sounding slightly surprised. "Is Grant expecting that level of publicity?"

"He's worked so hard on the new regional portfolio accounts, Arthur," Ava said smoothly, her voice laced with intense pride. "He deserves to be recognized in front of everyone who matters. I even contacted the regional SEC liaison office—Mr. Harrison—since Grant mentioned how much he admired his work!"

Arthur was instantly won over by her devotion. "That is extraordinarily generous of you, Ava. Consider the entire executive board confirmed. We will be there in full force."

"Thank you, Arthur," Ava whispered, a dark, hidden smile blooming across her face. "It's going to be an evening Grant will never, ever forget."

When she hung up the phone, she walked into her living room and looked at her calendar.

The days were ticking down rapidly:

Day Nine: Marcus completes the forensic clone of the Nevada USB drive. Day Twelve: The SEC compliance dossier is finalized and delivered to federal prosecutors under seal. Day Fifteen: Ava secures full civil asset attachment orders from the North Carolina Superior Court. Day Seventeen: The Party at the Grandview Club.

That evening, Grant came home carrying a fresh bouquet of white roses—Ava's favorite flowers. He set them on the dining table, looking at her with a fake, practiced devotion that made her blood run cold.

"Just because I love you," he said softly, wrapping his arms around her waist from behind.

Ava looked at the white roses. In ancient times, white roses symbolized purity and new beginnings.

To Ava, tonight, they looked like flowers for a funeral.

May you like

"You're too good to me, Grant," Ava murmured, resting her head against his chest, listening to the hollow, steady pulse of his lying heart. "I hope you know that everything I'm doing... I'm doing for our future."

Grant smirked into her hair, entirely unaware that the gallows was already being erected beneath his feet. "I know, babe. I know."
