Chapter 9 - The Presentation

Arthur Pendelton gestured to the media booth at the back of the ballroom. "Roll the video!"
The ambient chandeliers in the ballroom dimmed down to a deep, dramatic twilight blue.
Two massive, twenty-foot projection screens mounted on either side of the stage flickered to life.
Grant stood near his table, a modest, charming smile on his face, holding Ava's hand, expecting a montage of family photos, college memories, and romantic anniversary trips set to soft acoustic music.
Instead, the speakers filled with absolute, crisp, uncompressed audio clarity.
There was no music.
Only the sound of a woman's loud, familiar laugh.
Chloe Bennett's laugh.
The entire ballroom went silent. Guests paused with their wine glasses halfway to their lips.
On the massive twenty-foot screens, high-resolution text began to scroll in glowing white letters over a stark black background, matching the exact audio transcript:
CHLOE: "And she still doesn't suspect anything?"
GRANT'S VOICE: "She actually thanked me last week for working so hard."
CHLOE: "You're awful."
GRANT'S VOICE: "I know."
Grant’s hand froze inside Ava's grip.
The color drained from his face so fast he looked as if he had been struck by lightning. His jaw dropped open, but no sound came out of his throat.
Beside him, Chloe Bennett let out a sharp, terrified gasp, her hands flying to her mouth as she stared at the screen in absolute horror.
The audio continued, echoing loudly through the silent, crystal ballroom:
CHLOE: "How much did you take?"
GRANT'S VOICE: "Just under ninety grand. Mostly from the family account. If she’s too gullible to look at the offshore statements, that's her fault."
Arthur Pendelton’s face turned from polite attention to a dark, furious purple. He stepped backward off the stage, his eyes wide with absolute disbelief.
The executive board members of Briarstone Capital stared at the screens, their mouths open in shock. Grant’s parents sat frozen at their table, his mother clutching her napkin to her chest, her face pale with shame.
Grant frantically tried to pull his hand away from Ava’s. "Ava... turn it off... turn it off right now! What is this?!"
Ava did not let go. Her grip around his wrist was like a band of forged iron.
"Wait, Grant," Ava said, her voice completely smooth, calm, and loud enough for the entire head table to hear. "The best part is coming up."
The audio played its final, devastating sequence:
GRANT'S VOICE: "I move seven thousand here. Twelve there. Into Lumina Management in Nevada. Slow enough, she never sees the pattern... By her thirty-sixth birthday, I walk away with two million dollars in clean capital."
The audio stopped.
The black screens flickered once, and then shifted to a high-resolution display of court documents stamped with the official gold seal of the North Carolina Superior Court:
EX-PARTE EMERGENCY ASSET FREEZE ORDER CASE NO. 26-CVD-8842 DEFENDANT: GRANT MERCER / LUMINA MANAGEMENT LLC
Beneath the court order scrolled the complete transaction audit from the Bank of Nevada, showing $1.4 million in stolen client rebates, alongside IP logs identifying Chloe Bennett transferring funds from her Briarstone office computer.
Gasps, shouts, and frantic whispers erupted across the hundred and fifty guests in the ballroom.
Multiple executives stood up from their tables in outrage.
"Grant Mercer!" Arthur Pendelton’s voice boomed across the room, completely devoid of microphone amplification, ringing with pure, unbridled fury. "What in God's name is the meaning of this?!"
Grant stumbled backward, tripping over his chair, knocking a champagne glass to the floor. It shattered with a sharp, crystalline explosion across the hardwood floor.
"Arthur! Listen to me! It's a fake! It's an AI voice generation!" Grant screamed, his voice cracking with hysterical terror, pointing an trembling finger at Ava. "She forged it! She's crazy! She forged everything!"
At that exact moment—at precisely 9:00 PM—the heavy double doors at the back of the ballroom swung open.
Four men in dark, tailored suits walked into the ballroom.
Two were armed officers from the Charlotte-Mecklenburg Police Department.
The other two were special agents from the Federal Bureau of Investigation, wearing gold badges pinned to their lapels.
The lead FBI agent walked steadily down the center aisle of the ballroom, holding a federal arrest warrant in his gloved hand.
"Grant Mercer?" the agent called out, his voice cold, heavy, and authoritative.
Grant stared at the agents, his eyes wild with terror, his chest heaving as if he were suffocating. "No... no, no, no... you don't understand..."
The federal agent stopped in front of Grant.
"Grant Mercer, you are under arrest for federal wire fraud, grand larceny, and illegal dissipation of financial assets under investigation by the Securities and Exchange Commission."
The agent grabbed Grant’s arm, pulled it behind his back, and snapped a pair of heavy, cold steel handcuffs around his wrists.

Beside him, the second agent turned to Chloe Bennett. "Chloe Bennett? You are being detained as a co-conspirator in ongoing federal wire fraud."
Chloe collapsed into her chair, weeping hysterically as her hands were cuffed behind her back, her three-thousand-dollar designer handbag dropping uselessly to the floor.
