Chapter 8 - The Grandview Club

Saturday night arrived under a clear, star-filled Carolina sky.

At 7:30 PM, the grand ballroom of the Grandview Club downtown was glowing with crystal chandeliers, floral arrangements of white orchids, and thirty round tables draped in navy silk.

Over one hundred and fifty high-profile guests filled the room: the senior partners of Briarstone Capital, the entire executive board, prominent local investors, media representatives from the Charlotte Business Journal, and Grant’s parents, who had flown in from Chicago for the occasion.

At the head table near the stage sat Arthur Pendelton, the managing director of Briarstone, alongside two senior regional auditors.

Grant stood near the bar, looking extraordinarily handsome in a bespoke black tuxedo, holding a glass of vintage champagne. Beside him stood Chloe Bennett, wearing a dazzling sapphire dress, laughing at his jokes with an air of triumphant, secret possession.

Grant believed he was at the pinnacle of his life.

He had spent two years secretly moving $1.4 million into Nevada. He had successfully lured his firm’s partners to a dinner where he planned to establish his narrative as a dedicated executive. And in his inside jacket pocket lay the forged separation agreement he intended to hand to Ava in the private lounge at 9:15 PM.

At 7:45 PM, the heavy double doors at the back of the ballroom opened.

The room fell into an appreciative, admiring quiet.

Ava Mercer walked into the ballroom.

She wore a breathtaking, floor-length gown of liquid gold silk that clung to her figure like armor. Her dark hair was styled in sophisticated Hollywood waves, her lips painted a bold, fearless red. She wore no jewelry except for a pair of vintage diamond earrings her late father had given her on her graduating day.

She looked radiant, powerful, and utterly majestic.

Grant’s eyes widened as he stared at her. For a fraction of a second, a strange, forgotten spark of genuine awe flickered in his chest. He had forgotten how stunning his wife was when she claimed space.

"Ava..." Grant said, stepping forward as she reached the center of the room. "You... you look unbelievable."

"Thank you, darling," Ava said, her voice smooth as velvet, carrying effortlessly across the nearest tables. She leaned in, kissing his cheek. "Happy thirty-sixth birthday, Grant."

Chloe Bennett stood two feet away, her eyes narrowing with a sharp, bitter jealousy as she took in Ava’s breathtaking appearance.

"Ava," Chloe said, her tone laced with fake warmth. "What a magnificent event you organized. You really went all out."

"Only the best for my husband, Chloe," Ava replied, looking Chloe straight in the eye with a calm, blinding smile. "After all, a man only gets exposed like this once in his life."

Grant laughed, assuming it was a joke. "Exposed? I hope not too exposed!"

"Oh, don't worry, Grant," Ava said, taking a glass of champagne from a passing waiter's tray. "The spotlight is going to be directly on you."

At 8:30 PM, dinner was served—a three-course meal of filet mignon and Chilean sea bass.

As the dessert plates were cleared, Arthur Pendelton stood up from the executive table, taking a wireless microphone, and walked up to the central stage.

"Ladies and gentlemen," Arthur announced, his voice booming over the ballroom speakers. "May I have your attention please?"

The guests clapped politely, turning their chairs toward the stage.

"Tonight," Arthur continued, smiling down at Grant, "we gather to celebrate the thirty-sixth birthday of one of Briarstone Capital’s most ambitious senior strategists—Grant Mercer!"

Applause broke out across the room. Grant stood up, buttoning his tuxedo jacket, nodding gracefully to the crowd, radiating the supreme confidence of a king receiving homage.

"And," Arthur added, gesturing toward Ava, "we must give a special thank you to his brilliant wife, Ava, who organized this entire evening and asked for a special presentation video to be shown in his honor!"

Grant looked down at Ava, surprised. "A presentation video? Babe, you made a video for me?"

Ava looked up at him, her gold dress catching the crystal light, her green eyes cold, bright, and sharp as surgical steel.

"I didn't make it alone, Grant," Ava said softly, raising her glass toward him. "You helped me write every single word."
