Chapter 1 - The Shattered Gala

The slap lasted less than a second. The silence afterward ended a five-year marriage.

Nora Bennett Caruso stood beneath the massive crystal chandeliers of the Crown Harbor Hotel in Manhattan with the metallic taste of blood on her tongue and one hand pressed against her burning cheek. Nearly two hundred guests had seen Dominic Caruso cross the ballroom. They had seen him shove himself between his wife and Vanessa Moretti. They had seen Vanessa stumble backward in a white silk gown soaked with red wine. And they had seen Dominic strike Nora before asking a single question.

The orchestra kept playing. That somehow made it worse. Violins floated through the ballroom while conversations died one by one. Dominic's right hand was still half raised. His left rested protectively on Vanessa's shoulder.

Nora stared at that hand, then at Vanessa, then at the bruise already forming around her own wrist. She understood exactly what had happened. Vanessa had cornered her beside the champagne tower, her eyes gleaming with triumphant cruelty.

"You should have stayed home," Vanessa had whispered, leaning close enough for Nora to smell the expensive jasmine perfume on her throat.

Nora had tried to walk away, but Vanessa grabbed her wrist. When Nora pulled back, Vanessa deliberately tipped her full wineglass across her own pristine white dress and stumbled with a loud cry just as Dominic turned toward them. He had seen three seconds. And three seconds were apparently enough when a man had already decided whose pain mattered.

Nora looked at her husband. "Do you remember what day it is?"

Dominic's face changed, a brief flicker of uncertainty crossing his hardened jaw. That was her answer. Their fifth wedding anniversary. The anniversary gala had originally been his idea. Five years earlier, Dominic had married Nora in a small stone church in Connecticut, promising that no matter what the Caruso name became, she would always be the one person before whom he would never perform. Tonight, he had performed for an entire ballroom.

"Nora—"

She waited. Maybe he would ask what happened. Maybe he would notice Vanessa's fingerprints reddening her wrist. Maybe he would notice the cut inside her mouth. Maybe he would finally see the difference between protecting someone and possessing the right to punish someone.

Instead he said, "You embarrassed her in front of everyone."

Something inside Nora became very still. She reached up and removed the diamond earring that had been torn partly through her earlobe when his hand struck her. Blood touched her fingertips. She placed the earring directly into Dominic's open palm.

"You chose your answer," she said quietly. "Now live inside it."

She walked away through the center of the ballroom. Guests moved aside, some staring at the floor, others lifting phones. Nobody tried to stop her. Behind her, Vanessa started crying—delicate, perfectly timed tears.

Nora walked out into the cold rain, leaving the glitter of Crown Harbor behind forever.
