Chapter 3 - The Celebration

The grand ballroom on the top floor of Vance Tower was buzzing with excitement. Crystal chandeliers cast brilliant light across marble floors, while waiters in tuxedos carried trays of expensive champagne through a crowd of journalists, corporate board members, and Wall Street investors.

At the center of the room stood Mark Reynolds, clad in a tailor-made Italian suit, holding a glass of vintage wine. Beside him, Jessica Thorne wore an elegant white silk gown, looking radiant as she laughed with two senior partners from Halcyon Capital.

Linda Reynolds was mingling near the stage, boasting to anyone who would listen about her son's brilliant career.

"Mark worked tirelessly for this," Linda told a reporter from The Wall Street Journal. "He’s a visionary. The integration of Vanguard Industries under Halcyon will be the crowning achievement of his life."

Mark smiled, taking a sip of his wine, though beneath his confident posture, panic was still gnawing at his ribs. The corporate trustees of Vanguard had gone radio silent since yesterday afternoon. His phone calls to the legal department were going straight to voicemail.

"Don't worry, Mark," Jessica whispered, stepping close to him and sliding her hand gently into his arm. "The trustees are just posturing to squeeze a higher share price out of us. Once we announce the acquisition parameters to the press today, the board will have no choice but to sign."

"Did you double-check the real estate transfer documents?" Mark asked quietly, glancing around the crowded room.

"Everything is set," Jessica assured him with a smirk. "The lease for Halcyon’s headquarters in this building is secure for another seven years. We own the room, Mark. Relax."

Mark let out a breath, feeling his confidence return. He thought briefly about Emily and baby Leo. He wondered if she was still sitting in some cheap motel, crying, realizing how foolish she had been to defy him. She’ll come crawling back soon enough, he thought bitter satisfaction. And when she does, I’ll make her sign over every last piece of paper.

At 10:00 AM sharp, the master of ceremonies stepped up to the podium on the central stage. The room fell silent as camera flashes began to strobe across the room.

"Ladies and gentlemen," the MC announced, his voice echoing through the state-of-the-art speakers. "Welcome to Vance Tower. Today marks a historic moment as Halcyon Capital prepares to finalize the grand integration of Vanguard Industries. Please welcome Halcyon’s Vice President of Mergers, Mr. Mark Reynolds, and Chief Legal Counsel, Ms. Jessica Thorne!"

Applause erupted across the room. Mark adjusted his cuffs, flashed a triumphant smile, and stepped up to the stage alongside Jessica. He approached the podium, resting his hands on the marble edges, feeling like he was at the absolute peak of the world.

"Thank you," Mark said into the microphone, his voice dripping with authority. "Today, we stand in the crown jewel of modern finance—Vance Tower. Victor Vance built a legendary enterprise, but progress requires bold leadership. Halcyon Capital is prepared to guide Vanguard into a new era of unprecedented growth."

"And who, precisely, authorized you to speak on behalf of Vanguard Industries, Mr. Reynolds?"

A calm, razor-sharp female voice cut through the sound system, interrupting Mark mid-sentence.

The room went completely dead quiet. Journalists turned their cameras toward the back of the ballroom.

The heavy mahogany doors swung open.

Walking down the center aisle was Emily.

She wore a breathtaking navy blue wool dress, tailored to perfection, with silver hardware that sparkled under the chandelier light. Her dark hair was styled in an elegant, immaculate chignon. Her face was calm, her posture regal, completely devoid of the exhaustion or weakness she had displayed yesterday.

Flanking her left was Arthur Sterling, carrying a thick leather binder. Flanking her right were four high-ranking legal associates and two uniform officers from the city sheriff’s department.

Mark’s jaw dropped. The champagne glass in his hand trembled violently.

"Emily?" Mark gasped into the live microphone, forgetting entirely where he was. "What... what are you doing here? How did you get in?"

Linda rushed toward the front of the stage, her face turning crimson with rage. "Security! Get this woman out of here! She’s mentally unstable! She’s my son’s estranged wife!"

"Touch her, and you will be arrested for assault on private property," Arthur Sterling’s voice thundered through the room as he pulled a legal document from his briefcase and held it high.

Jessica stepped forward, her eyes wide with shock and confusion. "Arthur Sterling? What is the meaning of this? You represent Victor Vance’s private estate!"

"Indeed I do, Ms. Thorne," Sterling replied coolly, stepping up to the microphone beside the stage. "And as of nine o'clock yesterday evening, the complete probate filings for the Vance estate were finalized and approved by the Supreme Court of New York."

Sterling turned to face the crowd of journalists, pointing directly at Emily.

"Allow me to introduce the sole legal heir to Victor Vance, the sixty-two percent majority owner of Vanguard Industries, and the absolute individual owner of Vance Tower—Mrs. Emily Sarah Vance!"

A collective gasp echoed through the ballroom. Camera shutters went wild, flashbulbs exploding like a storm of light across the room.

Mark stood frozen at the podium, his face completely drained of color. "No... no, that’s impossible! She’s a teacher’s daughter! Her mother was nobody!"

"Her mother was Sarah Vance," Emily said, taking slow, deliberate steps up the stage stairs until she stood directly across from Mark. "And unlike you, Mark, she had integrity."

Jessica frantically pulled out her phone, her fingers flying across the screen as she pulled up the public property records registry. As the page loaded, her eyes widened in utter terror. She looked up at Mark, her voice shaking violently.

"Mark... it’s real," Jessica whispered, her voice caught on the microphone for the entire room to hear. "The building... the stock... everything is in her name."
