Chapter 6 - Desperate Measures

Three days had passed since the dramatic confrontation at Vance Tower. Emily had moved into a private, highly secured townhouse in the Upper East Side, provided by the Vance estate. With Sterling’s help, she was quickly learning the mechanics of managing a multi-billion-dollar enterprise, spending her days balancing board meetings with nursing Leo.
Meanwhile, Mark Reynolds’ world had completely collapsed.
Stripped of his job at Halcyon, his bank accounts frozen amidst pending lawsuits, and his reputation in ruins, Mark was hiding out at his mother’s suburban house—the very house where Emily had been thrown into the rain.
"This is unconstitutional!" Linda shrieked, pacing back and forth in her living room, waving a stack of legal bills. "She can't freeze your personal checking account, Mark! How are we supposed to pay the mortgage on this place?"
Mark sat on the couch, unshaven, wearing the same crumpled shirt he had worn for two days. Empty beer bottles littered the coffee table.
"She didn't freeze it, Mom," Mark said hollowly, staring at his phone. "Halcyon froze my performance equity because of the audit. And the bank called today—they're calling in the personal loan I took out to buy those extra Halcyon shares."
"Call her!" Linda demanded, pointing a finger at him. "Call Emily! She's your wife! She can't let her husband go bankrupt! Remind her of the times you took care of her! Remind her about Leo!"
"She blocked my number, Mom," Mark muttered. "And there’s a restraining order. If I go near her, I go to jail."
Just then, the front doorbell rang sharply.
Linda gasped. "Maybe that’s her! Maybe she’s come to her senses!"
Mark stood up quickly, hope flashing in his eyes as he hurried to the door and pulled it open.
It wasn't Emily. It was two process servers wearing dark jackets, accompanied by a police officer.
"Mark Reynolds?" the lead server asked.
"Yes?"
"You've been served," the officer said, handing Mark a massive legal thick packet. "Summons and Complaint for Absolute Divorce, Fraud, Intentional Infliction of Emotional Distress, and Full Custody of Leo Vance-Reynolds."
Mark grabbed the papers, his hands shaking violently as he skimmed the front page. "She's suing me for fraud?"
"And foreclosure," the second server added, pulling another envelope from his bag. "Notice of Acceleration on the mortgage for this property. Vance Holdings purchased the underlying deed to this residential mortgage yesterday from First National Bank. You are sixty days delinquent. You have fourteen days to cure the default or vacate the premises."
Linda let out a blood-curdling scream from behind him. "She bought our house mortgage?!"
"She bought the entire portfolio," the server said cold-bloodedly before turning around and walking back to his car.
Mark fell back against the open doorway, clutching the papers to his chest. The reality of his situation crushed down on him like a mountain. Emily wasn't just defending herself—she was dismantling every single pillar of his life, piece by piece, with military precision.

"We need a lawyer," Linda sobbed, sinking onto the hallway rug. "A famous lawyer!"
"With what money, Mom?" Mark whispered, looking at the gray sky outside. "We don't have any money left."
