Chapter 4 - The Eviction

The silence in the grand ballroom was suffocating. Hundreds of eyes were fixed on Mark Reynolds, who looked as if he might pass out on live television.

"This is a mistake!" Mark stammered, stepping toward Emily with his hands raised defensively. "Emily... listen to me. We need to talk about this privately. You're upset about last night, I understand, but—"

"Do not take another step toward me, Mark," Emily said, her tone cold enough to freeze water. She turned to Arthur Sterling. "Mr. Sterling, please read the formal notice."

Sterling adjusted his glasses, opened his binder, and read in a loud, clear voice that resonated across the silent ballroom.

"Notice of Default and Immediate Eviction," Sterling announced. "Under Section 14-B of the commercial lease agreement between Vance Holdings and Halcyon Capital, the property owner reserves the right to terminate all tenancy agreements immediately in the event of fraud, material misrepresentation, or failure to meet corporate governance standards."

Sterling looked directly at Jessica Thorne.

"Halcyon Capital’s lease for floors thirty through forty of Vance Tower is hereby revoked, effective immediately."

Panic erupted among the senior Halcyon executives in the audience. The Managing Director of Halcyon shoved his way through the crowd, shouting, "You can't do that! We have three hundred employees in this building! We have servers, confidential records, live trading floors!"

"You have two hours to clear your personal belongings," Emily replied calmly, looking the Managing Director dead in the eye. "At twelve o'clock noon, the building’s private security team will lock down all elevators, shut down the external server access points, and clear the premises."

"Emily, stop!" Linda screamed from the front row, scrambling up the stage steps. She grabbed Emily’s sleeve, her face twisted in desperation. "You can't do this to Mark! He worked his entire life for this promotion! If you ruin this, he’ll be destroyed!"

Emily slowly turned her gaze down to Linda’s hand on her arm. Two security guards immediately stepped up, gripping Linda’s elbows and pulling her back gently but firmly.

"Yesterday, Linda," Emily said softly, so only the three of them could hear, "you sat in my kitchen and watched your son throw his three-week-old child into a freezing rainstorm. You laughed while he locked the door."

Linda’s lips trembled, but no sound came out.

"You told me I had nowhere to go," Emily continued, stepping closer to Linda. "It turns out, you were sitting in my building."

Mark grabbed Emily's arm. "Emily, please! We're married! Everything you own belongs to both of us under marital property laws! You can't just throw me out! I am entitled to half of Vance Industries!"

Arthur Sterling stepped forward with a thin, mocking smile. "Actually, Mr. Reynolds, under New York State Domestic Relations Law § 236, assets acquired through direct inheritance or testamentary trust are strictly classified as separate property. They are entirely exempt from marital division. You are entitled to exactly zero percent of Miss Vance’s estate."

Mark’s hands dropped to his sides. He looked at Jessica, hoping for a legal lifeline, but Jessica was already backing away from him, frantically making calls on her cell phone to her own attorneys, completely ignoring Mark's desperate gaze.

"Furthermore," Sterling added, reaching into his coat pocket and pulling out a blue envelope, "I am serving you with a temporary restraining order issued by the New York Family Court this morning. You are to remain at least five hundred feet away from Miss Vance and your son, Leo Vance-Reynolds."

"Leo Vance-Reynolds?" Mark gasped. "You changed his name?"

"I gave him a name he can be proud of," Emily said quietly.

She turned away from Mark, walking to the edge of the stage to address the packed room of reporters.

"Vanguard Industries will not be acquired by Halcyon Capital," Emily declared into the cameras. "Effective immediately, I am assuming the role of Interim Chairwoman of the Board of Vanguard. We are initiating an internal forensic audit into Halcyon’s illegal insider trading activities regarding Vance family assets."

The room erupted into chaos as reporters hurled questions, flashbulbs erupted, and Halcyon executives rushed toward the exits in complete panic.

Emily walked down the stage steps, surrounded by her security team. As she passed Mark, who stood frozen in total defeat, she paused for just a second.

"You told me yesterday that I looked half dead, Mark," she whispered softly. "I was just waiting to be born."
