Chapter 2 - The Sound of Steel

Derek spun around, his hand instinctively dropping from Chloe’s arm as if he had touched hot iron. His face flushed bright red with immediate frustration at being interrupted, but as his eyes registered the face of the man standing before him, the anger instantly drained from his features, leaving him pale and wide-eyed.
“Mr. Moretti,” Derek stuttered, his voice dropping an octave as he tried to regain his composure. “I... I didn't realize anyone was out here. This is just a private family matter.”
Dominic Moretti did not look at Derek. His dark eyes remained fixed entirely on Chloe.
He took a slow step forward, stepping directly into Derek’s personal space. Dominic was at least three inches taller than Derek, with broad shoulders that filled out his bespoke suit in a way that spoke of real, physical danger rather than gym-built aesthetic.
“A family matter,” Dominic repeated softly. His voice carried an Italian cadence beneath a refined Manhattan accent. “Is that what you call threatening a woman who is carrying your child?”
Vanessa took a cautious step backward, her heels clicking softly against the floor as she tried to distance herself from Derek. She knew who Dominic Moretti was. Everyone in New York high society knew who he was, even if his name was never printed in the society pages.
Dominic was the CEO of Moretti Holdings, a massive conglomerate that owned shipping lines, commercial real estate, and private security firms across three continents. But in the darker, more powerful corners of the city, he was known simply as the head of the Moretti family—a man whose word carried more weight than any federal court, and whose enemies had a peculiar habit of disappearing from the city’s ledger entirely.
Derek tried to laugh, but the sound died in his throat. “Mr. Moretti, with all due respect, you don't understand the situation. My wife is... she’s overly emotional tonight. She’s misunderstanding things—”
“I have exceptional hearing, Derek,” Dominic interrupted smoothly. He turned his head slowly, his piercing dark eyes locking onto Derek’s pale face. “I heard every word you said. I heard you threaten to strip her of her home. I heard you threaten to leave her penniless with a newborn baby. And I saw you put your hands on her.”
Derek swallowed hard, his hands trembling slightly as he adjusted his cufflinks. “It’s just... marital friction. We’re working through some things. If you'll excuse us, we were just about to head back inside the gala—”
“She is not going back inside,” Dominic said calmly.
The statement wasn't shouted. It was delivered with the absolute, unquestionable weight of a court judgment.
Derek’s pride flared up despite his obvious fear. “Excuse me? She is my wife, Mr. Moretti. You don't get to dictate where she goes.”
Dominic didn't raise his voice. He took a half-step closer to Derek, closing the remaining distance between them until he was standing close enough that Derek could smell the faint scent of cedarwood, leather, and expensive tobacco clinging to his suit.
“I dictate whatever I choose in this city, Derek,” Dominic said quietly. “And right now, I am choosing to tell you that if you touch her arm again, or if you speak to her in that tone in my presence, I will have my security detail throw you down those marble stairs.”
Derek stared at him, his mouth opening and closing like a fish out of water. He looked to Vanessa for support, but Vanessa had lowered her head and moved even further down the corridor, clearly wanting no part of the confrontation.
Dominic finally turned his full attention to Chloe.
The terrifying, icy coldness that had filled his eyes while looking at Derek vanished instantly, replaced by a warm, intense focus that made Chloe’s heart skip a beat.
He stepped around Derek, completely ignoring the younger man, and extended a hand toward Chloe. His hand was large, square-jawed, with light calluses across the knuckles—the hand of a man who had built his empire with physical force before he ever used pen and paper.
“Mrs. Bennett,” Dominic said, his voice dropping into a gentle, low murmur. “Are you injured?”
Chloe looked at his outstretched hand, then up at his face. His dark eyes were deep, intelligent, and entirely focused on her well-being. There was no pity in his expression—only a quiet, steady strength that felt like an anchor in the middle of a storm.
“I’m... I’m fine,” Chloe managed to say, her voice barely above a whisper. “My arm just hurts a little.”
Dominic’s jaw set into a hard line. He looked down at her forearm, where red marks were already beginning to form beneath her fair skin where Derek’s fingers had clamped down.
Without asking permission, Dominic reached into his breast pocket and produced a fine linen handkerchief. He gently cupped her elbow with one hand—his touch so surprisingly light and careful it made Chloe catch her breath—and gently rested the soft cloth against her skin.
“You should put ice on that when you get home,” he said softly.
“She’s coming home with me,” Derek interjected, stepping forward, though he maintained a safe three-foot distance from Dominic. “Chloe, get your coat. We’re leaving.”
Dominic didn't even turn his head to acknowledge Derek’s voice. He kept his eyes on Chloe.
“Would you like to go home with him, Chloe?” Dominic asked.
The question hung in the air, heavy and loaded. It was the first time anyone had asked Chloe what she wanted in three years.
Chloe looked at Derek. She saw the rage hidden behind his blue eyes, the desperate need to control her, the total lack of remorse for the way he had treated her in front of six hundred people. Then she looked at Vanessa, who was standing near the elevator doors, nervously touching her diamond earrings—earrings that Chloe was almost certain had been purchased with money from their joint checking account.
Chloe looked back at Dominic Moretti.
“No,” she said clearly. “I don't ever want to go home with him again.”
A small, almost imperceptible smile touched the corner of Dominic’s lips. “Then you won't.”
“Now see here!” Derek took another step forward, his face turning crimson again. “This is ridiculous! You can't just take my wife! I will call the police! I will have you arrested for interference!”
Dominic finally turned around to face Derek. The warmth that had been present while looking at Chloe disappeared completely, replaced by a terrifying, hollow stillness.
“Call them,” Dominic said flatly. “Call the Chief of Police. His name is Harrison. Tell him Dominic Moretti is currently standing in the hallway of the Calder Hotel, and ask him how fast he can send a car to arrest me.”
Derek froze. He knew, as did everyone in the room behind them, that Chief Harrison took his orders directly from the Moretti family estate in Long Island.
Dominic reached into his coat pocket and pulled out a sleek, black leather phone. He didn't dial. He simply held it in his palm.
“Or better yet, Derek, why don't we discuss Bennett Capital’s third-quarter audit?” Dominic said softly.
Derek’s breathing hitched sharply. “What... what are you talking about?”
“I’m talking about the offshore shell company you registered in the Cayman Islands under the name 'Vanguard Real Estate Holdings',” Dominic said, his voice completely casual, as if he were discussing the weather. “The one you’ve been using to siphon six million dollars from your primary investors' escrow accounts to cover your gambling debts at the underground tables in Queens.”
Derek went deathly pale. The blood drained from his face so fast he looked as though he might faint onto the marble floor.
“How... how do you know about that?” Derek whispered, his voice trembling violently.
“I own the building where those tables are located, Derek,” Dominic replied, stepping closer until he was looking down at Derek with absolute contempt. “And I buy financial records the way other men buy morning newspapers. I’ve had your company’s internal ledgers on my desk for three weeks.”
Derek stood frozen, completely paralyzed by fear. If those records were made public, he wouldn't just lose his business; he would spend the next fifteen years in a federal penitentiary.
Vanessa stared at Derek in sheer horror. “Derek... what is he talking about? Is that true?”
Derek didn't answer her. He couldn't speak.
Dominic turned back to Chloe, completely ignoring the ruined man standing beside him. He extended his arm toward her, offering his elbow with the timeless grace of a true gentleman.
“May I escort you to my car, Mrs. Bennett?” Dominic asked softly. “My driver can take you anywhere you wish to go.”
Chloe looked at his arm, then looked at Derek, who was trembling in silence, completely defeated.
She stepped forward, placed her hand gently over Dominic’s forearm, and felt the immense, solid muscle beneath his wool coat.
“Yes, please,” Chloe said, her voice stronger than it had been all evening. “I would like that very much.”
Dominic smiled down at her, a genuine, warm expression that reached his dark eyes. “It would be my absolute honor.”
As they walked past Derek toward the elevators, Dominic paused for a single second beside the younger man. He didn't look at him, but his voice was loud enough for both Derek and Vanessa to hear with terrifying clarity.
“Tomorrow morning at eight o'clock, my attorneys will be contacting your office, Derek. You will sign over full ownership of the Manhattan townhouse to your wife, you will unfreeze every account, and you will agree to a quiet, uncontested divorce.”
Dominic turned his head slightly, his dark eyes flashing with a deadly light.
“If you refuse, or if you ever approach Chloe again, those financial records will be sitting on the desk of the United States Attorney by eight-fifteen. Am I making myself entirely clear?”
May you like
Derek slowly nodded his head, unable to utter a single word.
Dominic squeezed Chloe’s hand gently against his arm and guided her into the waiting elevator, leaving Derek standing alone in the hallway while the doors smoothly closed between them.
