Chapter 8 - The Gala of Shadows

By mid-January, the winter snow had blanketed Manhattan in a thick, quiet white layer.
Chloe was entering her ninth month of pregnancy. She was glowing, healthy, and completely surrounded by the protective embrace of Dominic’s world.
While Derek’s world had been defined by hollow showmanship and desperate social climbing, Dominic’s world was quiet, immensely powerful, and deeply secure.
However, Derek Bennett was not a man who allowed himself to be destroyed in silence.
Driven to absolute desperation by his impending financial collapse and the total loss of his reputation, Derek had spent his remaining liquid funds hiring an unscrupulous tabloid journalist named Marcus Pryce.
Pryce specialized in corporate scandals and high-society smear pieces. Together, they had concocted a vicious, fabricated narrative: that Chloe had been having an affair with mob boss Dominic Moretti for months, that the unborn baby was actually Dominic’s, and that Dominic had used illegal extortion tactics to steal Derek’s real estate assets and ruin his marriage.
On a freezing Thursday evening, the annual Metropolitan Real Estate Winter Gala was scheduled to take place at the Plaza Hotel—the very event where Derek had intended to announce his company’s midtown expansion project before his downfall.
It was an event where every major property developer, investor, and city politician would be present.
At five o'clock that afternoon, Dominic walked into the parlor of the townhouse, wearing an charcoal tailored tuxedo.
Chloe was sitting on the plush sofa, wearing a floor-length velvet maternity gown in deep navy blue. A breathtaking diamond pendant—a personal gift from Dominic—rested gracefully against her collarbone.
“Are you sure you want to attend tonight, Chloe?” Dominic asked gently, walking over and taking her hands in his. “You don't need to prove anything to these people. If you prefer to stay home, we can cancel immediately.”
Chloe looked at him, her dark eyes flashing with a quiet, unshakeable strength.
“Two months ago, Derek dragged me into a room full of six hundred people to humiliate me and make me feel small,” Chloe said firmly. “Tonight, I walk into that room beside a real man, with my head held high. I want everyone in this city to see that he didn't break me.”
Dominic looked at her with pure, unadulterated pride. A dangerous, satisfied smile touched his dark lips.
“Then we shall give them something to look at,” Dominic said softly.
Forty minutes later, the black Maybach pulled up to the grand entrance of the Plaza Hotel.
A crowd of photographers and society reporters stood outside under the glowing marquee, their cameras flashing violently through the falling snow as high-society couples stepped out of luxury limousines.
Frank opened the rear door of the Maybach.
Dominic stepped out first, adjusting his double-breasted tuxedo jacket. He turned back toward the car, extending his arm with complete, deliberate chivalry.
Chloe placed her hand in his, stepping out onto the red carpet. She looked radiant, powerful, and completely comfortable in her own skin, her dark navy velvet dress accentuating her beautiful, nine-month pregnant silhouette.
The flashbulbs erupted instantly. Photographers shouted their names, the light reflecting off the snow and Chloe’s diamond pendant.
Dominic ignored the reporters entirely. He wrapped a protective arm around Chloe’s waist, holding her close to his side as he guided her through the grand brass doors into the warmth of the Plaza’s main ballroom.
The grand room was packed with eight hundred of New York’s most elite figures.
As Dominic and Chloe walked through the main archway, a sudden, collective hush washed over the crowd.
Whispers spread through the room like wildfire. Eyes turned from every corner. People nudged each other, pointing toward the magnificent couple standing at the top of the marble entryway.
Then, from the left side of the grand bar, a figure stumbled forward into the light.
It was Derek.
He looked terrible. He was wearing an ill-fitting, older tuxedo, his eyes bloodshot, his face bloated from heavy drinking. Beside him stood Marcus Pryce, holding a digital voice recorder and a camera.
Derek had managed to sneak into the gala using an old board member pass that had not yet been cancelled.
“Well, well, well,” Derek shouted, his slurred voice echoing loudly over the quiet ballroom string quartet. “The happy couple has arrived!”
The entire room went completely silent. Guests backed away, creating a wide, open space between Derek and the main entrance.
Dominic didn't move an inch. He stood beside Chloe, his face settling into a terrifying, lethal calm.
Derek took three unsteady steps forward, pointing a shaking finger at Chloe.
“Look at her!” Derek yelled, turning to face the shocked crowd of investors and socialites. “Look at my loving wife! She ruined my company! She stole my house! She handed my business to a mobster while carrying another man’s child!”
Marcus Pryce immediately held up his camera, taking rapid photos of Chloe’s pregnant figure.
Chloe didn't flinch. She didn't hide her face. She stood tall beside Dominic, looking at Derek with profound, cold contempt.
Dominic took one slow step forward, stepping directly between Derek and Chloe.
“Derek,” Dominic said. His voice wasn't raised, but it carried a cold, absolute authority that seemed to freeze the blood in the room. “You have five seconds to lower your voice and leave this hotel.”
Derek let out a hysterical, unhinged laugh. “Or what, Moretti? You’ll have me killed? Go ahead! Do it in front of eight hundred people! Everyone in this room knows what you are! You’re a criminal who bribed my board and extorted my assets!”
At that exact moment, the heavy double doors at the side of the ballroom opened.
Two men in dark suits stepped into the room, followed immediately by Assistant United States Attorney Richard Vance—Leo Vance’s younger brother—and three uniformed federal marshals.
Richard Vance walked calmly into the center of the room, holding a crisp white document bearing an official federal seal.
“Derek Bennett?” Richard Vance called out, his clear voice echoing across the silent ballroom.
Derek blinked, turning around in confusion. “What... what is this?”
“I am Assistant United States Attorney Vance,” Richard stated calmly. “I have an arrest warrant issued by the Federal District Court for the Southern District of New York.”
Derek’s face drained of all color. “An... an arrest warrant? For what?”
“You are under arrest for fourteen counts of federal wire fraud, securities manipulation, grand larceny, and illegal offshore money laundering,” Richard Vance read from the document. “The evidence was delivered to my office this morning by the board of directors of Bennett Capital.”
Derek gasped, his eyes darting frantically to Dominic.
Dominic stood beside Chloe, his hands resting calmly in his pockets, his dark eyes watching Derek with absolute, icy detachment.
He had kept his word. The moment the asset transfers were legally finalized and Chloe’s trust was permanently secured, Dominic had released the full forensic audit to the federal prosecutors.
The federal marshals stepped forward, grabbed Derek’s arms, and pulled them behind his back, clicking heavy steel handcuffs around his wrists.
“No! This is a mistake!” Derek screamed, struggling against the marshals as he was dragged across the polished marble floor toward the exit. “Chloe! Tell them! Tell them he set me up! Chloe!”
Chloe stood tall beside Dominic, her hand rested calmly over her bump, watching her ex-husband being dragged away in chains. She didn't say a single word.
Marcus Pryce, the tabloid reporter, tried to slip away through the side exit, but Frank stepped into his path, blocking his exit with his massive frame.
“Mr. Pryce,” Dominic called out smoothly from across the room.
Pryce froze, slowly turning around, looking terrified.
Dominic walked slowly toward him, stopping two feet away. He looked down at the reporter with cold, sharp eyes.
“If I see a single word, a single photo, or a single fabricated story about Chloe or her child in any publication tomorrow morning,” Dominic said softly, his voice dropping to a whisper that made Pryce tremble, “I will buy the publishing company that prints it, fire every executive on the board, and ensure you spend the rest of your career writing obituaries for a penniless local newspaper in Alaska. Do you understand me?”
Pryce nodded frantically, his face chalk-white. “Yes, Mr. Moretti. Absolutely. erased... everything is erased.”
“Good,” Dominic said flatly. “Now get out of my sight.”
Pryce practically sprinted out the side exit, leaving his camera behind on a table.
Dominic turned back to the crowd of eight hundred elite guests, who were staring at him in absolute, stunned silence.
Dominic smoothly adjusted his cufflinks, walked back to Chloe’s side, and offered her his arm with complete, effortless grace.
“Shall we enjoy the evening, Mrs. Bennett?” Dominic asked softly, his eyes filled with pure warmth.
Chloe smiled, placing her hand gently over his forearm, feeling the solid, unshakeable strength beneath his suit.
May you like
“I would love that, Dominic,” she said clearly.
As the string quartet nervously resumed playing, Dominic led Chloe into the center of the grand ballroom, while the high society of Manhattan bowed their heads in absolute respect.
