Chapter 7 - A Room with Light

Over the next two weeks, the transformation of Chloe’s life felt nothing short of miraculous.

Under Dominic’s quiet oversight, a team of interior contractors arrived at the Manhattan townhouse. The cold, sterile modern furniture that Derek had chosen was packed away and donated. In its place came warm wood tables, plush velvet sofas in deep jewel tones, soft rugs, and bright, expressive artwork that Chloe selected herself from local independent galleries.

For the first time in four years, the townhouse felt like a home.

The nursery on the third floor was completely transformed into a sunlit sanctuary. The walls were painted a soft warm ivory, featuring hand-painted botanical murals, a hand-carved mahogany crib, and a deep, comfortable rocking chair where Chloe spent her late afternoons reading.

Derek had vanished from high society entirely.

Stripped of his position at Bennett Capital and facing mounting civil lawsuits from investors, he had retreated to a small rented apartment in New Jersey, isolated and completely ruined. Vanessa Mercer had left the city entirely after being blacklisted from every major real estate firm in the tri-state area.

Dominic, however, had become a constant, steady presence in Chloe’s life.

He didn't overwhelm her. He didn't demand her time or force himself into her space. Instead, he arrived every evening at six o'clock, carrying small, thoughtful gifts—a basket of fresh organic peaches from an upstate market, a rare art history book she had mentioned in passing, or simply fresh flowers for the entryway.

They spent their evenings sitting in the newly redecorated parlor, drinking tea by the fire, talking for hours about art, history, literature, and her father’s memory.

Chloe discovered that beneath Dominic’s terrifying reputation as the head of the Moretti family lay a brilliant, cultured, and deeply thoughtful man who possessed a quiet sense of humor and a deep, unshakeable loyalty to those he cared about.

One Tuesday evening in early December, as a light snowfall began to dust the windowsill, Dominic sat in the armchair opposite Chloe, holding a cup of espresso.

Chloe was sitting on the plush sofa, her large bump prominent beneath a soft cashmere sweater. She was eight months pregnant now, her baby growing larger and healthier by the day.

“You look peaceful tonight, Chloe,” Dominic said softly, his dark eyes reflecting the firelight as he watched her.

Chloe smiled, leaning her head back against the cushions. “I feel peaceful, Dominic. For the first time in my adult life, I wake up in the morning without fear. I owe all of it to you.”

Dominic set his espresso cup down on the low wooden table between them. He stood up, walked slowly across the rug, and sat down on the sofa beside her.

The proximity of his large, powerful frame sent a pleasant, familiar warmth through Chloe’s body. She didn't shrink away. In fact, she found herself instinctively turning toward him.

“You owe me nothing, Chloe,” Dominic said gently, his voice low and resonant. “Watching you bloom back into yourself over these past few weeks has been the greatest privilege of my life.”

He raised his hand, his long, dark fingers lightly hovering near her face before gently tucking a strand of dark hair behind her ear. His touch was so careful, so reverent, it made her breath catch in her throat.

“I have spent thirty years building an empire, Chloe,” Dominic murmured, his dark eyes locking onto hers with an intensity that made her heart race. “I have gathered wealth, power, and respect across this city. But until I met you in that hotel hallway, I never realized how empty my home truly was.”

Chloe’s heart pounded against her ribs. She looked at his sharp, handsome features—the silvering hair at his temples, the strong jaw, the dark eyes filled with a deep, uncompromising devotion.

“Dominic...” she whispered.

Before she could say another word, her unborn daughter kicked hard against her abdomen—a sharp, pronounced movement that visibly shifted the fabric of her cream sweater.

Chloe gasped slightly, placing her hand over her bump.

Dominic instantly looked down, his eyes softening with genuine concern. “Are you in pain?”

“No,” Chloe smiled, taking his large, calloused hand into her own. “She’s just very active tonight. Here... feel.”

Chloe gently placed Dominic’s hand over the side of her stomach, right where the baby was kicking.

Dominic froze completely.

The most feared man in New York, a man who had faced down rival mob bosses and ruthless corporate raiders without flinching, sat entirely motionless on the sofa, his breath held in sheer awe as he felt the tiny, powerful kick of life beneath his palm.

A slow, breathtaking smile spread across Dominic’s face—a warm, radiant expression that completely transformed his stern features.

“She’s strong,” Dominic whispered, his voice trembling slightly with an emotion he couldn't hide.

“She is,” Chloe said softly, looking up at his face. “She knows she’s safe now.”

Dominic looked up from her stomach, his dark eyes meeting hers. The emotional barrier that had existed between them—the lingering remnants of her past trauma and his protective distance—seemed to dissolve entirely in the quiet warmth of the room.

He didn't rush. He moved with a slow, deliberate grace, leaning in until his face was inches from hers.

“Chloe,” Dominic murmured, his breath warm against her skin. “May I?”

Chloe didn't hesitate. She closed her eyes and leaned forward, closing the remaining distance between them.

“Yes,” she whispered.

Dominic cupped the side of her neck with his hand, his large thumb resting gently along her jawline, and pressed his lips to hers.

The kiss was slow, deep, and filled with an incredible, overwhelming tenderness. It carried no force, no demand, no cold possessiveness like Derek’s kisses had. It was a promise—a promise of protection, of absolute devotion, and of a love that had been waiting in the shadows for the right moment to emerge.

When he slowly pulled back, his dark eyes were bright with deep emotion. He kept his forehead resting gently against hers, his breath mingling with hers in the quiet room.

May you like

“I will give you and your daughter everything in this world, Chloe,” Dominic whispered against her lips. “You will never stand alone again.”

Chloe wrapped her arms around his broad neck, pulling him close, and felt a profound, beautiful sense of complete peace settle over her heart.
