Chapter 5 - The King's Announcement

Three days later, the marks on Kara’s neck had faded to a pale yellow.

The penthouse had been transformed into a fortress of absolute comfort. Fresh flowers arrived every morning, chef-prepared meals were served on golden trays, and Daniel barely left her side, managing his multi-billion-dollar empire entirely from his home office.

“Daniel, you have to go to work,” Kara laughed softly one morning, leaning against the doorway of his study as he reviewed logistics reports on his laptop. “Your board of directors is going to think you’ve been kidnapped.”

Daniel looked up, his eyes softening instantly as he took in the sight of his wife. She was wearing a soft cashmere sweater, her hair tied back in a loose bun, a faint blush returning to her cheeks.

“Let them think what they want,” Daniel said, closing his laptop and standing up. He walked across the room, wrapping his arms around her waist, drawing her close. “Nothing in those boardrooms matters as much as what is in this room.”

“I’m fine, Daniel,” she said gently, tracing the sharp line of his jaw. “The doctor said I’m completely healthy. And… I don't want to hide in this penthouse forever. I want to celebrate.”

Daniel raised an eyebrow. “Celebrate?”

“We haven't told anyone,” Kara said, her eyes glowing with excitement. “Not your family, not our friends. I want to throw a dinner. A small one. Just our inner circle.”

Daniel considered this for a moment. He was a deeply private man, fiercely protective of his personal life, but seeing the joy returning to Kara’s face was something he could never refuse.

“Very well,” Daniel agreed, kissing the tip of her nose. “A dinner. On Friday. At the Plaza.”

“The Plaza?” Kara smiled. “I thought you wanted a small dinner?”

“For my heir, nothing is small,” Daniel said smoothly, a rare, wicked smirk playing on his lips.

By Friday evening, the private dining hall at the Grand Plaza Hotel was decorated with white orchids and shimmering crystal chandeliers. The guests arrived in high spirits: top executives of Rourke Maritime, high-ranking city officials who owed their careers to Daniel, and Kara’s closest friends from her art gallery days.

Among the guests was Julian Vance, a wealthy real-estate mogul and long-time rival of Daniel’s. Julian was a arrogant man who constantly tried to find a weakness in Daniel’s armor, always looking for a way to assert dominance in high-society circles.

As the champagne poured and the third course was served, Julian stood up, raising his glass, his eyes glinting with patronizing amusement.

“A toast,” Julian called out, gathering the room’s attention. “To Daniel Rourke. A man who has conquered the waters, the docks, and the markets. But tell us, Daniel… we’ve all noticed you’ve been absent from the trading floor this week. Whispers say you’ve been playing nursemaid at home.”

A subtle hush fell over the table. The other guests held their breath, knowing how dangerous it was to taunt the Wolf of the Harbor.

Daniel didn't flinch. He picked up his water glass, leaning back in his chair with absolute composure.

“I have been at home, Julian,” Daniel said calmly, his voice easily commanding the room. “Because unlike you, who spends his time chasing dying investments, I have been protecting the only investment that truly matters.”

Julian sneered slightly. “And what investment is that?”

Daniel stood up, taking Kara’s hand, pulling her gently up beside him. He looked down at her with a warmth that shocked everyone in the room who only knew him as a ruthless businessman.

“My wife and I are expecting our first child,” Daniel announced clearly.

The room erupted into applause and gasps of delight. Guests raised their glasses, shouting congratulations. Julian Vance’s smile faltered, replaced by a momentary look of embarrassment as he realized he had walked directly into a trap of his own making.

Daniel leaned over to Julian, whispering softly so only the mogul could hear: “And if anyone ever threatens my family’s peace again, Julian… they won't just lose their investments. They will lose everything.”
