Chapter 9 - The Birth of an Heir

Three months later, spring had returned to Manhattan.
The trees in Central Park were bursting with pink cherry blossoms, and the harbor waters glinted like diamonds under the warm afternoon sun.
In the private maternity wing of Mount Sinai Hospital—an entire floor that Daniel had purchased and renovated specifically for this day—the room was filled with soft classical music and the warm glow of afternoon light.
Kara lay in the grand hospital bed, exhausted, pale, but glowing with a divine, incomparable beauty. In her arms, wrapped in a soft blue blanket, was a newborn baby boy.
He had dark, thick hair, pale skin, and when he opened his tiny eyes, they were the exact same deep, piercing storm-gray as his father’s.
Daniel sat on the edge of the bed, staring at his son with an expression of profound, tearful reverence. The man who had commanded dock fleets, crushed powerful families, and ruled the underbelly of the city was completely helpless in the presence of this tiny seven-pound baby.
“Look at him, Daniel,” Kara whispered weakly, a soft smile resting on her lips. “He has your eyes.”
Daniel extended a large, calloused finger. The tiny baby instinctively reached out, his soft fingers curling tightly around his father’s index finger.
Daniel let out a shuddering breath, a single tear slipping down his cheek. He leaned down, pressing his lips gently against his son’s forehead, then turned to kiss Kara’s lips with lingering sweetness.
“What shall we name him?” Daniel asked softly.
Kara looked at her husband, seeing the love, the devotion, and the unyielding strength that had saved her life and given her a future she had once believed was impossible.
“Alexander,” Kara said gently. “Alexander Daniel Rourke.”
Daniel smiled, a genuine, radiant smile that warmed his entire face. “Alexander. The defender of men.”
At that moment, Marcus knocked softly on the door, stepping inside carrying a massive basket of white roses. He looked at the newborn baby, dropping to one knee in a gesture of absolute loyalty.
“Congratulations, Mr. and Mrs. Rourke,” Marcus said respectfully. “The docks are quiet. The city is peaceful. The empire is waiting for its prince.”

Daniel looked at Marcus, then back at Kara and little Alexander resting against her chest.
“Let them wait,” Daniel said softly, wrapping his arm around his wife and son. “My empire is right here.”
