Chapter 6 - The Whispers of Manhattan

News of Kara Rourke’s pregnancy sent ripples through Manhattan’s elite society.

For years, Daniel Rourke had been viewed as an unshakeable, cold force—a man married only to his empire. Seeing him so openly devoted, so fiercely protective of his young wife, transformed the dynamic of New York power circles. Kara was no longer just the quiet woman who married a billionaire; she was the untouchable matriarch of the Rourke legacy.

However, power always attracts jealousy.

A week after the Plaza dinner, Kara decided to visit her art gallery in Soho. She missed her work, missed the vibrant colors and creative energy of her former life. Daniel had reluctantly agreed, quadrupling her security detail. Two invisible guards walked fifty paces behind her, while Marcus personally drove her vehicle.

As Kara walked through the airy, high-ceilinged gallery, reviewing new paintings by emerging artists, a woman stepped out from behind a large abstract canvas.

It was Victoria Sterling.

Victoria was the daughter of an old shipping magnate, a woman who had once publicly pursued Daniel before he met Kara. She was draped in designer clothes, her face set in a cold, disdainful smile.

“Kara,” Victoria said, her tone dripping with fake affection. “Or should I say, Mrs. Rourke? I heard the wonderful news.”

“Victoria,” Kara replied politely, keeping a respectful distance. “Thank you.”

Victoria took a slow sip from a champagne glass she was carrying. “It’s truly amazing, isn't it? How a girl with… such a troubled past managed to lock down New York’s most dangerous bachelor. Tell me, does Daniel know everything about your past? The cheap apartments? The angry ex-boyfriends? The court cases?”

Kara felt a cold chill run down her spine, but she refused to show weakness. She drew herself up, remembering who she was now—not the scared girl in Queens, but the woman who carried Daniel Rourke’s child.

“Daniel knows everything about my past, Victoria,” Kara said, her voice steady and clear. “Just as he knows everything about yours. Including the illegal offshore accounts your father uses to hide his failing company’s debt.”

Victoria’s face went dead pale. Her champagne glass trembled in her hand.

“Where did you… how did you—” Victoria stammered.

“My husband tells me things,” Kara said with a quiet, powerful confidence. “Because he trusts me. And because he protects me. I suggest you take your champagne and leave my gallery, Victoria. Before I mention this conversation to Daniel over dinner.”

Victoria didn't say another word. She turned on her heel and hurried out of the gallery as fast as her high heels could carry her.

Standing by the front door, Marcus lowered his hand from his suit jacket, a faint, proud smile tugging at the corner of his lips. He pulled out his phone and sent a quick text to Daniel:

May you like

Mrs. Rourke handled a situation herself. She is truly your wife, sir.

Back in his boardroom, Daniel read the text and smiled softly to himself, feeling a surge of pride that warmed his cold, strategic heart.
