Chapter 5 - The Snake in the Department

The realization hit me like a splash of freezing water.

Six weeks ago, when I had been retained as an independent consultant by Moretti Development, the mandate had not come directly from the corporate board. It had come through an anonymous referral from the Office of the United States Attorney for the Northern District of Illinois.

My point of contact had been Deputy District Attorney Marcus Kane—a rising political star who had built his career on prosecuting organized crime.

“Kane,” I whispered, looking up at Adrian.

“Marcus Kane’s primary campaign for state attorney general was secretly funded through three offshore PACs registered under the exact same parent firm as Apex Horizon LLC,” Adrian revealed, pointing to a highlighted line in the ledger. “Marco was stealing the money from my firm, keeping forty percent for himself, and routing sixty percent to Kane’s illegal campaign chest.”

“And in exchange?” I asked.

“In exchange, Kane provided Marco with advance warnings regarding federal wiretaps, grand jury subpoenas, and law enforcement raids,” Adrian answered, his eyes gleaming with cold satisfaction. “They built a private, symbiotic machine right under my nose.”

I sat down on the edge of the velvet sofa, my mind racing as I assembled the pieces of the puzzle.

“Kane sent me into your organization,” I realized aloud. “He didn't send me to uncover the truth. He sent me because he knew I was Leo Russo’s daughter. He knew I had a personal grudge against your family. He expected me to find just enough dirt to ruin your company, trigger a federal raid, and execute you—while he and Marco quietly absorbed the remaining assets.”

“Precisely,” Adrian said. “He wanted you to be his blind weapon. He counted on your pain, your rage, and your desire for vengeance to mask his own hand in the game.”

I stared at the leather folder, my hand gripping my father’s bracelet so tightly the metal dug into my skin.

For twelve years, I had been driven by a burning desire to destroy the Moretti family. I had spent my youth studying forensic accounting, tax law, and corporate structures, sacrificing my personal life, my relationships, and my peace, all to prepare for the day I would bring down Adrian Moretti.

And all along, I had been manipulated by the very institution I trusted to deliver justice.

“They used my father’s memory,” I said, my voice trembling with a dark, rising fury that surprised even me. “They used his death to turn me into their clean-up crew.”

Adrian stood up, walking toward me until he stood right beside my chair. He reached down, his large, warm hand gently covering mine, covering the silver bracelet.

“Then let’s show them what happens when the weapon turns around,” Adrian said softly.
