Chapter 6 - The Unholy Alliance

By sunrise, the rain had stopped, leaving the streets of Chicago slick, black, and reflective under the pale autumn light.

Inside the private conference room of Adrian’s top-floor offices at the Moretti Tower, five people sat around a heavy glass table: Adrian, myself, Frank, and two of the most aggressive criminal defense attorneys in the Midwest.

On the high-definition monitor mounted on the wall, a digital network map showed the interconnected web between Marco Moretti, Marcus Kane, three shell banks in Nassau, and four high-ranking officials within the Chicago Police Department.

“If we hand this file directly to the Department of Justice in Washington,” one of the attorneys noted, gesturing to the monitor, “Kane will be arrested within six hours. But Marco will take a deal. He’ll trade testimony against Adrian to reduce his own sentence for murder.”

“Marco isn't trading anything,” Adrian said, his voice dropping like an iron door. “Marco is done.”

“We can’t just make a federal prosecutor disappear, Adrian,” I interjected, leaning forward on my elbows. “Kane is a high-profile public figure. If he vanishes right after Marco is detained, the FBI will drop a hundred agents on your front porch.”

Adrian looked at me, a sharp spark of interest in his grey eyes. “What do you propose, Elena?”

“We don't make him vanish,” I said, pulling my laptop forward and opening a fresh spreadsheet. “We drown him in his own paper.”

The attorneys looked at me with confusion, but Adrian leaned back in his leather chair, listening intently.

“Kane’s entire political campaign relies on a thirty-million-dollar clean audit report that is scheduled to be filed with the Federal Election Commission by 5:00 PM today,” I explained, pointing to a set of digital filings. “The audit report was prepared by an independent accounting firm that Kane secretly owns through his brother-in-law.”

I tapped three keys on my keyboard, displaying a series of encrypted access protocols I had extracted from Marco’s personal server during the night.

“I have the master access codes to their offshore routing servers,” I continued, a cold smile touching my lips. “If we execute a real-time ledger synchronization at 4:30 PM, every dollar of Marco’s stolen eighteen million will automatically re-index into Kane’s primary campaign account as an illegal foreign corporate contribution.”

Frank let out a low whistle of admiration. “The FEC will flag it automatically.”

“Not just flag it,” I added. “It will trigger an automatic, non-discretionary federal banking freeze. Kane won't be able to pay his attorneys, his staff, or his campaign managers. And the media will have the full digital paper trail twenty minutes before the evening news.”

Adrian looked at me, his eyes filled with profound, unyielding respect.

“You aren't just an auditor, Elena,” Adrian whispered, a low laugh vibrating in his chest. “You’re a tactical nightmare.”

“I’m Leo Russo’s daughter,” I replied, looking him in the eye. “And I’m finishing my father’s work.”
