Chapter 10 - The Echoes of the Estate

Six months later, spring had arrived in Chicago.
The oak trees along the driveway of the Duca estate were covered in fresh, vibrant green leaves, and the air carried the sweet scent of blooming lilacs from the south garden.
A grand afternoon reception was underway on the terrace.
Dozens of guests—city officials, legal scholars, journalists, and corporate leaders—gathered near the stone fountain to celebrate the official launch of the Thomas Carter Foundation.
Olivia stood near the grand archway of the terrace, wearing an elegant ivory coat-dress, holding a glass of sparkling water. Beside her stood her mother, Martha, who was chatting happily with Matteo about the new security systems installed at her house in Oak Park.
Down on the lawn, Lily was running alongside Nero, chasing a red ball through the grass, her laughter floating upward into the afternoon sky.
Gabriel walked up to Olivia, holding two glasses of lemonade. He handed one to her, his gaze following the little girl and the giant dog.
"She’s getting fast," Gabriel noted with a smile. "Nero is having trouble keeping up."
"She’s seven," Olivia said softly, taking a sip of her drink. "She has endless energy."
"She belongs here," Gabriel said, looking at Olivia. "You both do."
Julian’s memory was no longer a shadow hanging over the estate. A bronze memorial plaque dedicated to Julian Duca and Thomas Carter had been placed near the river garden—a place of quiet reflection surrounded by white roses.
Matteo walked over, stepping up to Gabriel’s side. "The evening perimeter reports are in, Gabriel. Everything is clean. The servers at Michigan Avenue are running at one hundred percent capacity under the new audit protocols."
"Good work, Matteo," Gabriel nodded. "Make sure the night shift teams have everything they need."
"They do," Matteo smiled, glancing at Olivia. "Director Carter personally reviewed their operational rotas this morning. There isn't a loose screw or an unpolished latch on the entire property."
Olivia chuckled softly, shaking her head. "I’m just doing my job, Matteo."
As the sun began to set over the horizon, painting the sky in long, brilliant streaks of violet, gold, and crimson, the guests slowly migrated into the main dining hall for dinner.
Gabriel and Olivia remained on the terrace for a few moments, watching the evening shadows stretch across the lawn.
The heavy steel gates at the end of the driveway stood open, welcoming the cool, peaceful evening breeze.
Nero trotted up the stone steps, stopping between Gabriel and Olivia. He looked out over the quiet grounds, let out a soft, contented breath, and lay down across the cool marble floor.
He didn't bark.
He didn't stare at the dark windows or the high stone walls.
He just rested his heavy head on his paws, watching over the home that had finally been made safe.

Olivia looked at Gabriel, then down at the dog, feeling a deep, undisturbed sense of belonging settle over her heart.
The mystery was solved. The debt was paid. And in the quiet halls of the Duca estate, the shadows had finally given way to light.
