Chapter 8 - Clearing the Dust

Three weeks later, the autumn sun broke through the gray clouds over the Duca estate, painting the stone terraces in warm shades of gold and bronze.

The heavy steel gates at the perimeter were open, allowing the cool breeze from the lake to sweep through the landscaped gardens. The estate no longer felt like a fortress under siege; it felt like a home recovering its peace.

Inside Guest Room 7, the high-power work lights and technical equipment were gone. The carpet had been deep-cleaned, the furniture restored to its original positions, and the air smelled of fresh lavender and beeswax polish.

Olivia stood near the window, holding a polishing cloth and a small brass tray. She looked up at the ceiling vent.

The brass grille was back in place, secured with fresh screws. The dust had been wiped away, leaving the metal gleaming in the afternoon sunlight.

Behind her, a soft, heavy footstep sounded on the parquet floor.

Nero padded into the room, his black tail wagging slowly. He walked up to Olivia, resting his heavy chin against her knee, letting out a long, contented sigh.

"Hey, boy," Olivia smiled, reaching down to scratch the dog behind his large ears. "No sound today, huh? Just quiet."

"He doesn't bark at that room anymore," Gabriel’s voice came from the doorway.

Olivia turned around.

Gabriel stood in the doorway, dressed in a casual charcoal sweater and dark trousers, looking relaxed for the first time since she had known him. The dark circles under his eyes had faded, and his posture was open, lacking the rigid tension that had defined him during the investigation.

"Mr. Duca," Olivia said, setting her polishing cloth on the tray.

"Gabriel," he corrected gently, walking into the room and standing beside her near the window.

They looked out over the lawn, where Lily was running through the fallen leaves with Teresa, her joyful laughter echoing across the garden.

"The federal court finalized the asset forfeiture proceedings against Apex Holdings yesterday," Gabriel said quietly. "Every dollar Marcus Vance stole from my brother’s trust has been recovered."

"And Arthur Vance?" Olivia asked.

"He accepted a plea agreement," Gabriel said. "Eight years in a low-security facility in Michigan. His mother’s home in Oak Park has been placed in a private trust funded by Duca Enterprises so she can remain there with full-time care for the rest of her life."

Olivia looked at him, surprised by the generosity extended to the family of a man who had helped betray him. "You didn't have to do that for his mother."

"His mother had no part in his choices, Olivia," Gabriel said. "I know what it means to lose family because of another person’s greed. I won't inflict that on an old woman."

He turned to face her, leaning his lower back against the window sill.

"I spoke with my legal team this morning," Gabriel continued. "We’ve established the Thomas Carter Foundation for Financial Transparency. It will fund independent investigative auditing for municipal public projects across the state."

Olivia’s eyes welled with sudden, warm tears. "Thomas would have... he would have loved that. He spent his life fighting people who used numbers to hide the truth."

"It was the least I could do for the man who saved my estate," Gabriel said softly.

He reached into his sweater pocket and pulled out a clean ivory envelope, holding it out to her.

Olivia looked at the envelope. "What’s this?"

"Your new employment agreement," Gabriel said.
