Chapter 7 - The Reckoning in the Tower

Marcus Vance slowly leaned back in his leather chair, crossing his legs with practiced composure, though a nervous twitch had appeared near the corner of his left eye.

"You think you can hold me here, Gabriel?" Marcus asked, his tone dropping into a cold, arrogant sneer. "This is Michigan Avenue. I have sixty equity partners downstairs. If I don't walk out of this building in twenty minutes, my legal department will file an emergency writ of habeas corpus before you can reach your car."

"Your equity partners are currently being served with federal search warrants by the Securities and Exchange Commission, Marcus," Matteo’s voice echoed from the doorway as he stepped into the room holding a stack of court documents. "Four minutes ago, the FBI seized the primary servers at Apex Holdings’ offices in Chicago, New York, and London."

Marcus’s composure finally splintered. He looked at Matteo, then at the documents in his hand. "On what grounds?!"

"On the grounds of wire fraud, corporate espionage, treasonous infrastructure manipulation, and accessory to capital murder," Matteo said calmly.

"You have no proof of murder!" Marcus spat, his voice rising in panic. "Julian’s death was an accident! The Coast Guard report signed off on it!"

"The Coast Guard report was based on fuel line degradation," Gabriel said, standing up from his chair. His massive frame seemed to dominate the high-ceilinged room, casting a shadow across the walnut table. "Fuel line degradation caused by a remote-triggered thermite charge installed in the starboard engine bay. The same thermite charge Arthur Vance admitted his associate bought at a supply depot in Gary, Indiana."

Marcus looked frantically between Gabriel and the glass doors, realization settling over him like a suffocating blanket. The network he had spent five years constructing—the quiet, lucrative web of surveillance, insider trading, and cold-blooded murder—had been dismantled in less than forty-eight hours because a dog had heard a dry bearing in an air duct.

"Gabriel..." Marcus began, his tone shifting into a desperate, pleading register. "Listen to me... we can work this out. The Blackwood project... it’s worth billions. I can transfer the short options back to your family trust! I can give you eighty percent of the equity in Apex! You’ll control the entire Midwest logistics network!"

Gabriel walked slowly around the table until he stood directly beside Marcus’s chair. He looked down at the financial titan who had sat at his family’s dinner table for a decade, who had toasted his brother’s memory at Julian’s funeral, and who had ordered the bugging of his home.

"My brother died in icy water, Marcus," Gabriel whispered. "He died screaming while you sat in your Lake Forest mansion counting your options."

Gabriel reached down, caught Marcus by his lapels, and yanked him out of the chair, lifting the older man until his expensive shoes were barely touching the carpet.

"Gabriel! Don't!" Olivia cried out, standing up from her seat.

Gabriel stopped. His knuckles were white against Marcus’s silk tie, his breathing heavy, his dark eyes burning with an ancient, murderous rage.

"Gabriel," Olivia said softly, stepping around the table until she was three feet away. "Look at him. He’s already gone. Don't ruin your life for a man who spent his whole life breaking others."

Gabriel looked at Olivia. Her voice was steady, clear, and filled with a quiet strength that ground him back to reality.

Slowly, deliberately, Gabriel lowered Marcus back to the floor.

He released his grip, shoving the financial director backward into his chair.

"Matteo," Gabriel said, not taking his eyes off Marcus. "Hand him over to the federal agents waiting in the lobby."

As two armed federal marshals stepped through the glass doors to place heavy iron handcuffs on Marcus Vance’s wrists, the fallen titan looked up at Olivia one last time.

"Who the hell are you?" Marcus spat, his voice trembling with hatred as the marshals pulled him toward the elevator.

Olivia picked up Thomas’s black leather notebook from the walnut table, holding it firmly against her chest.

"I’m Thomas Carter’s wife," Olivia said clearly. "And I’m the head of domestic operations."
