Chapter 7 - The Gathering Storm

Despite their newfound strength, danger was never far from the Moretti name.

In early October, a shadow fell over the city. Victor Cruz—the head of a rival syndicate that had long sought to control the Great Lakes shipping channels—began making aggressive moves against Luca’s perimeter territories.

Warehouse fires were reported near the docks. Two of Luca’s senior transport drivers were ambushed, and rumors began circulating that someone inside the Bennett Maritime board was leaking internal shipping manifests to Cruz's syndicate.

One rainy Tuesday evening, Luca returned to the estate at 11:00 p.m., his face dark with exhaustion.

Ellie was waiting for him in his study, a hot meal and a cup of black coffee waiting on his desk.

Luca sat down in his heavy leather chair, rubbing his temples with his long fingers. "It's a mess, Ellie," he gritted out. "Cruz is trying to force a war before winter sets in. He knows if he can disrupt our holiday cargo shipments, the port authorities will step in and revoke our commercial license."

Ellie walked over behind his chair, resting her hands on his tense shoulders, her fingers digging gently into his thick muscles to work out the knots.

"He's using the old Bennett manifests, isn't he?" she asked calmly.

Luca opened his eyes, looking up at her in surprise. "How did you know that?"

"Because those manifests were designed by my father ten years ago," Ellie explained, moving around to sit on the edge of his desk. "They look like standard routes, but they contain built-in delays at the locks near the river mouth. Cruz thinks he’s intercepting our main cargo, but he’s actually targeting decoy ships."

She pulled a tablet from her folder, opening a series of color-coded shipping maps she had spent three days redrafting.

"Look here," Ellie said, pointing to a blue line running along the northern shore. "I re-routed our real cargo through the private channels we secured last month. Cruz is spending his resources attacking empty barges while our real revenue is already clearing customs in Detroit."

Luca stared at the screen, then looked up at his wife. A slow, brilliant smile spread across his face—a look of pure pride and amazement.

"You re-routed the entire northern fleet without telling Cruz's informants?" Luca asked, his voice filled with awe.

"I learned from the best," Ellie said with a playful wink. "Never let your enemies see your real moves until the cargo is already in the warehouse."

Luca reached out, pulling her off the edge of the desk and onto his lap. He wrapped his arms around her waist, burying his face in the soft crook of her neck, letting out a long, relieved sigh.

"I married a genius," he murmured, his lips brushing against her warm skin.

"You married your partner," Ellie corrected him gently, wrapping her arms around his broad shoulders. "We fight together, Luca. Always."
