Chapter 9 - The Sovereign

Victor Cruz stepped out of his crumpled SUV, his hands raised, his face covered in sweat and dirt. He was surrounded, outmaneuvered, and completely broken.

"Luca!" Cruz screamed, his voice cracking with terror. "Don't do this! We can make a deal! I'll give you my territorial rights! I'll leave Chicago forever!"

Luca walked slowly toward the trapped mob boss. He didn't rush. He didn't shout. Every step he took carried the crushing, absolute authority of a man who ruled the city.

He stopped five feet from Cruz, raising his weapon with cold, mechanical precision.

"You came to my home," Luca said, his voice dropping into a register so low and dark it made the air tremble. "You brought violence to the place where my wife sleeps."

"It was business, Luca!" Cruz pleaded, dropping to his knees on the gravel. "Just business!"

"No," a voice called out from the stone terrace above.

Luca paused, looking up.

Ellie was standing on the second-floor balcony, looking down at the courtyard. She was dressed in a simple dark gown, her dark hair blowing gently in the cool autumn wind. She didn't look frightened. She looked regal, powerful, and completely unshakeable.

"Business is built on negotiation, Mr. Cruz," Ellie said, her voice echoing clearly over the silent courtyard. "What you did was desperation. And in this city, desperate men do not make deals with the Moretti family."

Luca looked up at his wife, a cold, deadly pride shining in his eyes. He turned back to Cruz.

"You heard my wife," Luca said calmly.

He didn't fire his weapon. Instead, he snapped his fingers. Vance and four security officers stepped forward, slamming Cruz to the ground and pulling his arms behind his back in heavy steel handcuffs.

"Take him to the federal authorities," Luca ordered coldly. "Let him spend the rest of his miserable life in a maximum-security cell thinking about the mistake he made coming to this house."

The guards dragged the screaming, pleading mob boss away toward a waiting police van that was already pulling into the driveway with flashing lights.

The courtyard cleared. The alarms were shut off, leaving only the quiet sound of the wind rustling through the oak trees.

Luca stood alone on the gravel, looking up at the balcony.

Ellie turned and walked back inside, descending the grand staircase to meet him in the foyer.

When Luca walked through the heavy front doors, he immediately dropped his weapon onto a side table, ignoring the blood and dirt on his cuffs, and pulled Ellie into a fiercely tight embrace.

He buried his face in her dark hair, holding her so tightly she could barely breathe, his entire body trembling with the lingering adrenaline of the threat.

"Are you hurt?" he whispered frantically, checking her arms, her face, her hands. "Did anyone reach you?"

"I'm fine, Luca," Ellie said, cupping his face in her hands, her thumbs wiping away a smudge of soot from his cheek. "I’m completely safe. You locked the perimeter just like we planned."

Luca looked into her calm, loving eyes, and for the first time since she had known him, a tear slipped from his dark eye, tracing a clean path down his dusty cheek.

"I was so terrified I wouldn't reach you in time," Luca confessed softly, his voice cracking.

Ellie smiled, kissing his cheek gently. "Luca... I told you before. I'm not a victim waiting to be saved anymore. I'm your wife. And as long as we stand together, no one can ever take this house from us."
