Chapter 5 - The Dinner Table

At 7:15 PM, the front door opened.

Ethan walked into the house, his coat over his arm, looking visibly rattled. He had his personal phone in his hand, pressing buttons frantically.

"Sarah?" he called out, his voice sharp with stress. "Where are you? Did you see my secondary work phone anywhere? I couldn't find it all day, and my primary cards were declined when I tried to pay for gas on the way home. The system must be having an outage."

Sarah stepped out of the kitchen, wearing a simple beige sweater, her hair neatly combed. She looked entirely calm.

"I haven't seen your phone, Ethan," she lied softly. "Dinner’s on the table. Bring the kids down, please."

Ethan growled under his breath, loosening his tie as he stomped upstairs. Five minutes later, he sat down at the head of the dining table with Leo and Lily.

The dinner was elaborate: roasted chicken with herbs, mashed potatoes, freshly baked bread, and a crisp green salad.

"Dad, why are you so grumpy?" Lily asked, holding up her fork.

"I'm fine, Lily," Ethan snapped, grabbing his wine glass. He took a heavy gulp, then stared at Sarah. "Seriously, Sarah, something weird is going on with the bank. I tried to pay for a team lunch today and my Amex failed. I had to borrow cash from my junior associate. Did you pay the monthly bill like you were supposed to?"

"I didn't," Sarah said, taking a quiet bite of her salad.

Ethan froze, his glass halfway to his mouth. "What do you mean you didn't? That card is linked to my business account!"

"I know," Sarah said evenly. "I canceled the authorization."

The dining room went completely silent. Leo looked up from his plate, sensing the sudden shift in air pressure.

"Sarah, what the hell are you talking about?" Ethan whispered, leaning across the table, his eyes darting toward the children. "Don't play games. I’ve had an insanely stressful day."

"You had a stressful day?" Sarah asked, her voice pleasant and polite. "Was it before or after you kissed Lauren in your red sports car at eight-fifteen this morning?"

Ethan’s face went entirely grey. The color drained from his lips so quickly he looked as if he were about to vomit onto his roasted chicken.

"I... I don't..." he stammered, his eyes wide with absolute horror.

"Mom, who is Lauren?" Lily asked, looking between her parents.

"No one, sweetie," Sarah said, turning to her daughter with a warm smile. "Leo, take your sister upstairs to your room, please. Finish your dinner up there."

Leo didn't ask questions. He grabbed his plate, took his sister’s hand, and quickly hurried up the stairs, closing the door behind them.

Ethan sat paralyzed at the head of the table, his jaw working silently as he stared at his wife as if she were a total stranger.

"Sarah..." he finally managed to say, his voice trembling. "Listen to me. You're confusing things. Lauren is... she’s an associate. It was just a stupid, meaningless gesture—"

"I have her work phone, Ethan," Sarah interrupted softly, pulling the black iPhone from her apron pocket and setting it gently beside his plate. "I have the Nevada account records. I have the lease agreements for her apartment. I have the receipts from Saks. And I have Victoria Vance representing me."

Ethan stared at the black phone as if it were a venomous snake.

"You... you went through my files?" he asked, his panic rapidly twisting into defensive rage. "You broke into my office? That’s private corporate property, Sarah! You have no right—"

"I have every right," Sarah said, standing up from her chair. "Because every dollar you gave her was built on my labor. I stayed home so you could build your career. I raised your children. I ironed your shirts. I cooked your meals while you bought Cartier bracelets for a twenty-four-year-old."

Ethan slammed his fist onto the table, making the glasses rattle. "I earn the money in this house! Me! You haven't worked a real job in ten years! You think you can just freeze my accounts? I’ll have my lawyers reverse it by tomorrow morning!"

"Try it," Sarah said calmly. "Victoria already filed the emergency freeze with the court. Your corporate HR has been notified of the unauthorized signature uses on your tax declarations. And the dealership is picking up your Porsche tomorrow morning at eight."

Ethan stood up so quickly his chair knocked backward onto the hardwood floor. He pulled out his personal phone, his fingers shaking violently as he dialed a number.

He put it on speaker.

After three rings, a shrill, hysterical female voice answered:

"Ethan?! Where the hell are you?! My landlord just told me the rent check bounced! My credit cards were declined at the salon! What is happening?!"

It was Lauren.

Ethan looked at Sarah, his face pale, sweat glistening on his forehead.

"Lauren, calm down—" Ethan began.

"Don't tell me to calm down!" Lauren screamed through the speaker. "The lease on my BMW was revoked this afternoon! They said the guarantor canceled the line! What did you do?!"

Sarah leaned down toward the phone, her voice cold and perfectly clear:

May you like

"He didn't do anything, Lauren," Sarah said. "I did. Welcome to the real world. You’re going to have to get a job."

Sarah reached out, pressed the red disconnect button, and walked out of the room.
