Chapter 10 - The New Morning

At 6:00 AM on a crisp May morning, Sarah’s alarm buzzed gently on her nightstand.

She didn't reach out to silence it out of fear of waking anyone. She let it play its soft, musical chime as she sat up in bed, stretching her arms into the warm sunlight filling her bedroom.

She walked downstairs, made herself a cup of black coffee, and walked out onto the front porch.

The neighborhood was quiet. The dew glistened on her chrysanthemums.

She sat down on the porch swing, taking a slow sip of her coffee, feeling the cool morning air against her face.

In her lap lay her tablet, displaying the monthly revenue report for her business. The numbers were strong, growing, and entirely her own.

She thought briefly of Ethan, who was now working as a mid-level analyst at a small firm in New Jersey, living in a modest one-bedroom apartment, paying off his back taxes dollar by dollar. She felt no malice toward him anymore. He was simply a chapter in a book she had finished reading.

Sarah leaned back against the swing, watching the sun rise higher over the suburban trees, casting long, golden light across her driveway.

She had spent nine years making sure another man could shine.

Now, standing in the clear light of her own making, Sarah Miller was finally living for herself.
