Chapter 10 - The New Beginning

Six months later.

The summer sun streamed through the high windows of our new home in upstate New York—a quiet, sunlit house surrounded by oak trees and green gardens, paid for by the fully recovered inheritance funds returned to me by the court-ordered restitution of Eleanor’s remaining assets.

In the nursery, pastel blue curtains blew gently in the breeze. A new balloon arch stood in the corner, but this one was made of light paper and soft cotton ribbons.

Daniel stood by the window, holding Arthur.

At seven months old, our baby boy was thriving. His cheeks were round and pink, his eyes bright and alert, and the deep bruise on his shoulder had faded completely into smooth, healthy skin. He babbled happily, reaching his tiny fingers out toward the sunlight.

I walked over and wrapped my arms around Daniel's waist, resting my head against his shoulder as Arthur giggled and grabbed a lock of my hair.

"What are you thinking about?" Daniel asked softly, kissing the top of my head.

"I was thinking about the encrypted file," I said softly, looking at my son's joyful face. "I spent years believing that keeping her secrets was the only way to hold my family together. I was so afraid of the truth breaking us apart."

"And now?"

"Now I know the truth didn't break us," I smiled, taking Arthur into my arms and kissing his forehead. "The truth set us free."

The past was behind iron bars, where it belonged. And here, in the warm quiet of our home, my real life was finally beginning.
