Chapter 5 - The Donation Box Trap

By morning, news of the brutal assault at the baby shower had leaked to local news outlets. The sight of a grandmother attacking her heavily pregnant daughter over a donation box sparked public outrage across the city.
In a high-security conference room at the precinct, Eleanor’s high-priced defense lawyer, Arthur Vance (no relation to the detective), met with the Lead Prosecutor, Assistant District Attorney Sarah Hayes. Eleanor sat beside her attorney, wearing a pale blue designer suit, dabbing her dry eyes with a tissue.
"My client is an upstanding citizen," her attorney proclaimed grandly. "This entire incident was a tragic misunderstanding. The balloon arch was unstable. Mrs. Price reached out to brace it, lost her footing, and the iron bar fell onto her daughter. The accusation of attempted murder is hysterical nonsense driven by postpartum hormones."
ADA Hayes raised an eyebrow. "Is that why she grabbed the donation box first, Mrs. Price?"
"I was simply securing the money!" Eleanor sobbed dramatically. "Clara is mentally unstable. She has spent months lying about me. She’s trying to steal my late husband's estate!"
At that moment, the door pushed open. Maya Chen walked into the room, wearing a tailored navy suit and carrying a leather briefcase.
"If I may interrupt," Maya said smoothly, stepping to the head of the table. "I represent Clara Sterling."
Eleanor’s expression hardened immediately. "Get her out of here. She has no standing in a criminal proceeding!"
"Actually, I do," Maya replied, opening her briefcase and pulling out a certified stack of documents. "First, regarding the $50,000 donation box Eleanor tried to steal during the attack—Mrs. Price, you were mistaken."
Eleanor froze. "What are you talking about?"
"You believed that box was filled with cash raised by Clara's friends," Maya smiled coldly. "In reality, the box contained only ceremonial, decorative envelopes. The actual $50,000 raised by the community was deposited directly into an irrevocable, restricted medical trust three days prior. A trust that requires two independent legal approvals—neither of which belongs to you."
Eleanor’s face turned pale.
"Furthermore," Maya continued, sliding a thick USB drive across the table to ADA Hayes, "this drive contains the complete decrypted records of Eleanor Price’s financial history. Including the $120,000 she embezzled from Clara’s inheritance trust, sixteen fraudulent loan applications using Clara's identity, and over fifty recorded phone calls where Eleanor threatens to destroy Clara's marriage if she exposes the theft."
ADA Hayes picked up the USB drive, her eyes narrowing as she looked at Eleanor.
"This changes things," Hayes said softly. "This isn't an accidental fall. This is grand larceny, wire fraud, identity theft, and attempted murder with a clear financial motive to destroy the victim before these files were released."

Eleanor looked at Maya, her fake tears vanishing instantly, replaced by pure venom. "She wouldn't dare," Eleanor whispered. "She’s my daughter!"
"She isn't your victim anymore," Maya countered.
