Chapter 4 - The Unlocking

"Daniel," I whispered, shaking his arm gently.

He blinked awake, instantly alert. "Clara? What's wrong? Are you in pain?"

"I need you to get my laptop out of my overnight bag," I instructed. "And call Maya Chen right now."

Maya Chen was my corporate litigation attorney—a brilliant, unyielding lawyer I had quietly retained three months prior when I caught Eleanor using my Social Security number to secure a $100,000 high-interest loan.

Ten minutes later, Maya’s voice filled the room over Daniel’s phone speaker.

"Clara! God, I just got Daniel's message. How are you? How is the baby?"

"Arthur is stabilized in the NICU," I answered. "Maya, Eleanor attacked me at the baby shower. She hit my bump with an iron rod. She's in custody right now, trying to claim it was an accident while using the 2021 tax filings to blackmail me."

Maya gasped on the other end of the line. "That monster. Clara, tell me you're ready."

"I’m ready," I said. "Authorize the release of the file."

Daniel brought the laptop over to my bed. I pulled up the encrypted security interface on the screen. The folder was named simply: Eleanor_Price_Audit_2026.enc.

It was protected by a 256-bit encryption key that required three separate authentication steps: my primary password, a security token held by Maya’s firm, and my biometric thumbprint.

I pressed my thumb against the scanner. The screen flashed green: ACCESS GRANTED.

Folders filled the screen, meticulously organized into sub-directories:

Forged_Signatures_2019-2025

Illegal_Credit_Lines_SBA_Loans

Audio_Recordings_Extortion_Attempts

Forensic_Accountant_Report_Final.pdf

"What is all this, Clara?" Daniel asked, staring at the screen in complete shock. "You’ve been tracking this whole thing?"

"Every dime," I said. "She thought I was still her naive little girl who signed whatever paper she put in front of me. She thought I’d let her destroy my life to protect her reputation. But when I found out I was pregnant, I promised myself my child would never be raised under her shadow."

I looked at Detective Vance. "Detective, this folder contains five gigabytes of verified financial crimes, wire fraud, and recorded extortion. Hand this over to the District Attorney. Tell them Eleanor Price didn't just assault me—she had a premeditated financial motive to silence me."
