Chapter 4 - The Audit

By midnight, the storm outside the Ashford Tower in downtown Manhattan was raging with relentless fury.
Inside the 60th-floor executive penthouse suite, the lights burned bright. Eight forensic accountants, three private investigators, and a team of corporate lawyers sat around a massive glass conference table covered in stacks of financial ledgers, hard drives, and legal briefs.
I sat at the head of the table, dressed in a comfortable silk blouse and dark trousers, my sprained ankle wrapped neatly in a supportive bandage. My father sat to my right, sipping black coffee, while Arthur Pendelton organized a series of bank statements.
"We’ve only scratched the surface of the digital audit, Sophia," Arthur said, sliding a thick red folder across the glass toward me. "And it’s far worse than simple marital infidelity."
I opened the folder.
Over the last eighteen months, Ethan had systematically embezzled approximately fourteen million dollars from Ashford Global’s secondary development accounts. He had funneled the funds through four shell companies registered in the Cayman Islands—companies managed by none other than Melissa Grant’s brother.
"He wasn't just planning to replace me as CEO," I said, scanning the wire transfer records with a practiced legal eye. "He was preparing to drain our liquid assets and declare insolvency for the tech division, then buy it back at pennies on the dollar through his offshore firm."
"Precisely," Arthur nodded. "He believed that because you were a 'quiet housewife,' you would never check the sub-ledger audit reports. He forged your digital authorization signature thirty-two times."
My father placed his coffee cup down with a sharp clack. "That is grand larceny, corporate fraud, and forgery. He’s going to federal prison for thirty years."
"No," I said softly, looking up from the papers.
My father and Arthur both looked at me in surprise.
"Not yet, Dad," I said, a dark, cold spark lighting up in my eyes. "If we arrest him tonight, his high-powered defense lawyers will post bail, tie us up in preliminary hearings for eighteen months, and let him play the victim in the press. He’ll claim this was a bitter divorce retaliation by an elite heiress."
"What are you suggesting, Sophia?" my father asked, a proud, knowing smile creeping onto his weathered face.
"Ethan thinks he’s rock bottom right now," I murmured, leaning back in my leather chair. "He thinks he lost his job and his house tonight. He doesn't know that we hold his personal loan guarantees. He doesn't know that his entire offshore network is compromised. I want him to try to fight back. I want him to spend every last dollar he stole trying to destroy me... so I can crush him completely in open court."
At that moment, my private phone chimed on the table.
It was an incoming call from an unregistered number.
I pressed speakerphone and set the device in the middle of the table.
"Sophia!" Ethan’s raspy, hysterical voice filled the room. Rain and wind screamed in the background of his line; he was clearly calling from a public phone booth on the street. "Sophia, answer me! You crazy bitch! You think you can destroy my life in one night?!"
"Hello, Ethan," I said calmly. "Are you enjoying the weather?"
"Listen to me!" Ethan roared, his voice cracking with unhinged rage. "You ruined me tonight! You humiliated me in front of the entire industry! But you made a huge mistake, Sophia! You forgot who actually holds the operational keys to the Apex project! I backed up all the source code on my private drive! You fire me, and I sell that code to your biggest rival, Sterling Bio-Tech, by tomorrow morning! You’ll lose two billion dollars!"
I smiled, looking over at Arthur, who was already quietly recording the line.
"Is that a threat, Ethan?" I asked sweetly.
"It’s a promise!" Ethan spat. "You give me back my CEO title, restore my access to the accounts, and sign over fifty percent of the Ashford Trust by noon tomorrow, or I burn your family empire to the ground! Do you hear me?!"
"I hear you loud and clear, Ethan," I whispered. "Good luck with Sterling Bio-Tech."
I pressed end call.
I looked at my father's head of cybersecurity sitting at the far end of the table. "Did you trace his location?"
"Yes, Ma'am," the director replied with a grin. "He’s standing outside a payphone three blocks from the Plaza Hotel. And as for his private drive containing the Apex source code..."

The director tapped his keyboard.
"We deployed a remote wipe signal to his personal cloud servers five minutes ago. The only thing left on his private drive is a high-resolution video file of his arrest order signed by the State Attorney General."
