Chapter 8 - The Aftermath
"On count one of corporate grand larceny," Judge Vance declared, bringing his heavy wooden gavel down, "the court sentences you to twelve years in federal prison. On count two of wire fraud, eight years, to run consecutively. Total sentence: twenty years at Fort Dix Federal Correctional Institution, without the possibility of parole."
BANG.
The gavel sounded like the final door slamming shut on Ethan’s life.
Ethan collapsed into his chair, weeping hysterically as federal marshals grabbed his arms, lifting him to his feet and hauling him out through the rear exit of the courtroom.
Behind us, Melissa Grant—who had pled guilty to secondary conspiracy charges three weeks earlier in exchange for probation and three thousand hours of community service—sat weeping silently in the back row, her reputation in the financial industry utterly incinerated.
As my father, Arthur, and I walked down the grand granite steps of the federal courthouse into the bright afternoon sun, a wall of reporters and news cameras rushed forward.
"Chairman Ashford! Sophia!" a reporter shouted, pushing a microphone forward. "How does it feel to finally have this eight-year nightmare behind you?"
I stopped on the steps, looking out over the crowded plaza of New York City.
"It wasn't an eight-year nightmare," I answered calmly into the cluster of news microphones. "It was an eight-year lesson. Ashford Global is stronger today than it has ever been. We have expanded our clean-tech development sector, increased our employee profit-sharing margins by twenty percent, and restored absolute integrity to our leadership."
"And what advice do you have for other women in business who find themselves underestimated by the people around them?" another reporter asked.

I smiled, looking straight into the camera lens.
"Never argue with people who mistake your patience for weakness," I said clearly. "Let them build their towers on your ground. Because when the time comes... you don't just take back what's yours. You take the ground out from under them."
