Chapter 8 - The Golden Cage

The master suite in the west wing of the Romano estate was larger than Hazel’s entire apartment building.
It featured soaring ceilings with carved wooden beams, a private stone fireplace, plush velvet furniture, and a massive king-sized bed covered in rich silk sheets. Tall glass doors opened onto a private balcony overlooking the manicured gardens and the misty forests beyond.
Hazel stood in the center of the luxurious room, wearing a soft, oversized cashmere sweater and leggings that Damian’s staff had provided for her.
It had been three days since the incident at her apartment.
Three days of absolute, surreal luxury. She had been treated not as a maid, but as royalty. The estate staff brought her gourmet meals on silver trays, offered her warm baths infused with lavender oils, and catered to her every whim.
Frankie Sullivan’s organization had completely vanished overnight. Rumors whispered among the houseguards that Sullivan had fled the state in terror after Damian Romano personally leveled three of his illegal casinos in a single evening.
Yet, Hazel felt restless.
She walked out of her suite and down the quiet, carpeted hallway toward Damian’s third-floor study.
She knew the rule. She knew she shouldn't wander into his private quarters. But the rule felt like an ancient myth now—a artifact of a past life before they had bled together on the leather sofa.
She pushed open the heavy oak doors.
Damian was sitting at his grand mahogany desk, wearing a dark dress shirt with the top buttons unbuttoned, his sleeves rolled up to his forearms. He was looking over financial ledgers under the warm glow of a desk lamp.
He looked up as she stepped into the room.
The sharp, stern line of his mouth softened instantly. He set down his pen.
"You should be resting, Hazel," Damian said, his deep voice filling the room with familiar warmth.
Hazel walked slowly across the Persian rug, stopping at the edge of his desk.
"I can't rest anymore, Damian," she said softly. "I've been sleeping for three days. I feel like a golden bird locked in a golden cage."
Damian leaned back in his leather chair, his gray eyes studying her dark, expressive face. "You are safe here."
"I know I am," she agreed, stepping around the desk until she was standing right beside his chair. "And I am so grateful to you. You saved my life twice. You cleared my debt. You protected me."
She hesitated, looking down at her hands.
"But I don't understand what I am doing here, Damian," Hazel whispered, looking back into his eyes. "I'm not your maid anymore. I'm not your prisoner. What am I to you?"
Damian remained silent for a long moment. He reached out, his long fingers wrapping gently around her hand, pulling her closer until she was standing between his knees.
He looked up at her, his dark eyes filled with a raw, vulnerable truth that he had kept hidden from the world for four long years.
"Four years ago, my wife betrayed me," Damian said softly, his voice carrying the faint weight of old sorrow. "She worked with my enemies. She tried to have me killed. When she died, she took a piece of my humanity with her. I swore I would never let another woman close enough to hurt me. I turned my skin into stone."
He raised her hand, pressing a soft, lingering kiss against her palm.
"And then you walked into my study," Damian continued, his thumb gently stroking her inner wrist. "A quiet, terrified girl who carried the weight of the world on her narrow shoulders. You patched my wounds. You held me in the dark. And for the first time in four years, the stone broke."
Hazel’s breath caught in her throat. Her heart hammered against her ribs like a joyous drum.
"I don't want you to be my maid, Hazel," Damian whispered, standing up from his chair and towering over her. "And I certainly don't want you to be my prisoner."
He stepped closer, wrapping his strong arms around her waist, pulling her flush against his broad chest.
"I want you to be mine," Damian rasped, his eyes locking onto her pink lips. "If you will have me."
Hazel looked up into the face of the man the entire underworld feared—a man who had killed for her, who had protected her, who had opened his cold heart to her soft hands.
"I am already yours, Damian," Hazel whispered.
May you like
Damian lowered his head, his lips meeting hers in a deep, passionate, breathtaking kiss.
The touch was electric, shattering the last remaining shadows of his past, filling the quiet study with a sweet, fiery warmth that promised a lifetime of devotion.
