Chapter 9 - The Lion’s Vow

Two weeks later.
The grand ballroom of the Romano estate was filled with brilliant light, orchestral music, and the low, respectful murmurs of over two hundred high-society guests and underworld leaders from across the Midwest.
It was the annual Romano Winter Gala—a display of absolute power, wealth, and dominance.
In the past, Damian Romano had attended these galas alone, standing on the upper balcony like a distant, cold king, watching his territory with sharp, untouchable eyes.
Tonight was different.
At the top of the grand marble staircase, Damian stood clad in a flawless black tuxedo. Beside him stood Hazel.
She was breathtaking. She wore a floor-length emerald green silk gown that hugged her curves perfectly, her brown hair styled in elegant waves, a stunning diamond necklace sparkling against her collarbone—a gift from Damian’s private vault.
She looked every bit a queen.
The crowd below stared up in absolute shock and awe. Whispers rippled through the room like wildfire.
Who is she? Where did she come from? The Don is holding her hand!
Damian didn't care about the whispers. He held Hazel’s small hand firmly in his, his thumb lightly stroking her knuckles, offering her an immovable anchor of confidence.
He led her down the grand staircase, stepping into the center of the ballroom.
Marco approached them, carrying two crystal glasses of champagne on a silver tray. He bowed his head respectfully to Hazel, a genuine, warm smile on his face.
"Good evening, Miss Hazel," Marco said warmly. "You look radiant."
"Thank you, Marco," Hazel smiled, taking a glass.
Damian took his glass, resting his free hand securely on the small of Hazel’s back, pulling her close against his side. He turned to face the grand room, raising his glass high into the air.
The room fell into an immediate, breathless silence.
"Friends, associates, and allies," Damian’s deep, booming voice echoed across the hall, carrying absolute, undisputed authority. "Thank you for joining us tonight."
He looked down at Hazel, his gray eyes softened by profound love and devotion.
"For four years, this house has been cold," Damian said, his voice echoing through the silent ballroom. "It was a fortress built on fear and solitude. But tonight, the winter is over."
He raised Hazel’s hand, kissing her knuckles in front of the entire underworld.
"I introduce to you Hazel Brooks," Damian declared, his voice ringing out like a royal decree. "The lady of this estate. My partner. My heart. Anyone who seeks her friendship finds mine. Anyone who dares to raise a hand against her... will answer to me."
The crowd erupted into thunderous applause, bowing their heads in deference to their new queen.
Hazel looked up at Damian, her eyes shining with tears of pure, unadulterated happiness.

"You're making a grand scene, Don Romano," she teased softly, leaning her head against his broad shoulder.
"Let them watch," Damian rasped, leaning down to capture her lips in a sweet, possessive kiss right in the center of the ballroom floor. "Let the whole world know that you belong to me."
