Chapter 10 - The Sovereign's Vow

Six months after the fall of the Moretti family, the grand ballroom of the Peninsula Hotel in downtown Chicago was dressed in white silk and gold lights.
It was the night of the annual Reyes Foundation Gala—the most prestigious event of the city’s social calendar. The room was filled with hundreds of guests: city officials, business moguls, socialites, and reformed underworld leaders who had aligned themselves under Damian’s new, orderly regime.
At the center of the grand stage stood Damian Reyes. He looked striking in a tailored black tuxedo, his hand firmly holding Elena’s. She wore an exquisite sapphire-blue velvet gown, her hair swept up in an elegant style, her skin radiant and unmarked.
The crowd erupted into applause as Elena concluded her speech, detailing the foundation’s expansion into three new shelters across the state.
Damian stepped up to the microphone, turning his head to look at her with an intensity that commanded the absolute silence of the five hundred people in the room.
"Six months ago," Damian began, his deep voice carrying clearly through the speakers, "I believed that strength was measured by how much control a man could exert over his territory. I believed that power was built on fear and silence."
He paused, taking Elena’s hand and lifting it so that everyone in the room could see their intertwined fingers—and the flawless silver ring resting on her finger.
"I was wrong," Damian continued, his eyes locked onto hers. "True strength is not measured by the fear you create. It is measured by the safety you provide to those who have none. This city belongs to those who build, those who protect, and those who refuse to let the dark corners of the world go unchallenged."
He turned back to face the audience, his expression hardening into the untouchable sovereign authority that Chicago respected.
"Let this gala be a reminder to every person sitting in this room, and every person living in this city," Damian declared, his voice ringing like a bronze bell through the hall. "As long as I draw breath, no victim under my sky will stand alone. And no coward who hides behind violence will ever find a place to hide."

The ballroom erupted into a standing ovation, the sound echoing through the grand hall and out into the streets of the city.
Damian stepped back from the podium, pulling Elena close into his arms. Beneath the glittering chandeliers of Chicago’s highest tower, surrounded by the elite of the city he ruled, the mafia boss kissed his former maid—not as a superior, not as a savior, but as a man who had finally found his home.
