Chapter 4 - The Unseen Shield

By 2:00 p.m., Damian was back in his study at the estate. The rain outside had turned into a steady, gray downpour, drumming against the expansive windows.

Elena was in the hallway, slowly polishing the silver sconces mounted along the walls. Her movements were sluggish, her face pale with exhaustion and the lingering dread of what awaited her at home at the end of her shift. She kept checking the clock on the wall, each ticking second bringing her closer to five o'clock—the hour she was required to return to the apartment on 24th Street.

The study door opened, and Damian stepped out into the corridor.

"Elena," he called gently.

She flinched, instinctively dropping her polishing cloth before picking it up with trembling hands. "Yes, Mr. Reyes? Am I taking too long? I'm almost finished—"

"Come inside," he said.

She followed him into the warm, firelit study, her hands tucked securely into her apron pockets. Damian did not sit behind his desk this time. He stood by the hearth, watching her as she stood nervously near the center of the room.

"Your shift is over for today," Damian announced.

Panic flashed across her eyes. "Sir? Please... did I do something wrong? Please don't fire me. I need this job. I really need it—"

"You're not fired, Elena," Damian interrupted softly. "You're moving."

She froze, her brow furrowing in confusion. "Moving?"

Marcus entered the room carrying two heavy leather suitcases and set them by the door. Behind him walked Rosalind, who carried a soft wool coat over her arm.

"Your things have been retrieved from the apartment on 24th Street," Damian said smoothly, as if reporting a simple administrative update. "Your personal documents, your clothes, and your mother's old jewelry box are all in those bags."

Elena’s jaw dropped. She backed away a step, her voice breathless and frantic. "What... what did you do? If Hector finds out you were there, he’ll—he’ll kill me! You don't understand what he's like!"

Damian took two slow steps toward her, stopping just out of her personal space. "Hector Vane is currently on a one-way bus out of Illinois. He will never return to Chicago. And if he ever attempts to make contact with you again, my men will handle him permanently."

Elena stared at him, her chest heaving as her mind struggled to process his words. "He's... gone?"

"He's gone," Damian confirmed. "You will never have to hide your wrists in this house again. You will never have to lie to cover for a coward's temper."

A choked sound escaped her throat. The defensive walls she had spent years building—the quietness, the stoicism, the terror—shattered in a single second. Tears welled up in her eyes and spilled down her pale cheeks, her body shuddering as sob after sob tore through her chest.

She collapsed forward, her strength completely giving out.

Damian moved instinctively, catching her before she hit the floor. He lifted her into his arms and carried her to the soft leather sofa near the fire, sitting beside her as she wept into her hands. For three years, she had lived in a constant nightmare of fear and isolation, and for the first time, she was safe.

"It's over, Elena," Damian murmured, his voice softer than anyone in Chicago had ever heard it. "You are safe here."
