Chapter 5 - A New Light

Three weeks passed, and the Reyes estate underwent a quiet transformation.
The pale, terrified maid who had once moved like an invisible ghost through the halls had begun to change. With Hector gone and her debts settled through Damian's legal team, Elena began to heal. The dark purple bruises on her wrists faded into faint yellow outlines before disappearing entirely. Her cheeks regained a healthy, natural color, and she no longer flinched when someone opened a door too quickly.
Damian had offered to let her leave domestic service entirely, offering her a generous stipend to attend university or find a career elsewhere. But Elena had quietly insisted on staying.
"This is the first place in my life where I’ve felt human," she had told him one evening while delivering his late-night tea. "I want to stay."
Her presence in the house had become a steady, comforting anchor for Damian. He found himself looking forward to 6:45 a.m., not for his coffee, but for the quiet conversations they shared before the rest of the city woke up. She was sharp, insightful, and possessed an innate kindness that softened the harsh, violent realities of his life as a syndicate boss.
However, the peace was not destined to last.
While Hector Vane was a low-level thug, he had owed forty thousand dollars to a far more dangerous entity in Chicago: the Moretti family.
The Morettis were the primary rivals of the Reyes syndicate, controlling the eastern docks and operating with a ruthless disregard for civilian collateral. When Hector fled town under Damian's threat, he left behind a massive unpaid gambling debt to Marco Moretti, the hot-headed younger brother of the Moretti family Don.
Marco Moretti did not care that Hector had fled. He only cared that Damian Reyes had personally intervened in a situation involving one of his debtors. To Marco’s warped sense of pride, Damian’s actions were an open provocation—a sign that the Reyes family was stepping into Moretti territory to protect a mere housemaid.
On a rainy Thursday evening, while Damian was away attending an emergency meeting with his lieutenants downtown, a dark sedan pulled up outside the gates of the Reyes estate.
Marcus was on duty at the guardhouse, but he was caught off guard when three heavy smoke grenades were tossed over the iron fence, blinding the security cameras and filling the driveway with dense, acrid gas.
Gunfire echoed through the manicured gardens.
Inside the estate, Rosalind pulled Elena into the central security room—a reinforced panic space built into the heart of the mansion.
"Stay inside, Elena!" Rosalind commanded, locking the heavy steel door from the inside. "Marcus and the men will handle this."

Through the closed-circuit monitors mounted on the wall, Elena watched in horror as masked men in dark jackets breached the main entrance, their weapons drawn. At the front of the group stood Marco Moretti, a sneer plastered across his face as he shouted commands into the smoke-filled foyer.
"Where is she?" Marco bellowed, his voice carrying through the security speakers. "Where is the maid Reyes thinks he can protect? Tell Damian he can have her back when he pays off her husband's tab!"
