Chapter 5 - The Front Steps of State Street

The atmosphere outside Calloway Tower was electric.
Over thirty reporters, photojournalists, and local news anchors stood shoulder-to-shoulder on the icy sidewalk of State Street. Microphones were clustered around a hastily erected podium where Ethan Calloway stood beneath the massive gold lettering of his company's sign.
Ethan looked terrible. His eyes were bloodshot, his dark hair disheveled beneath his expensive wool coat. Vanessa stood right beside him, wearing a sharp black suit, holding a stack of press releases, desperately trying to project an aura of corporate tragedy.
"My wife was targeted!" Ethan was shouting into the sea of microphones, his voice echoing off the surrounding concrete buildings. "Declan Pierce exploited a vulnerable, pregnant woman to launch an illegal, hostile takeover of a family-owned shipping legacy! This is not corporate restructuring—this is personal extortion!"
Flashbulbs exploded repeatedly.
"Mr. Calloway!" a reporter from Channel 5 shouted. "Is it true your wife filed for divorce this morning in Suffolk County?"
"Any documents signed by my wife under duress will be contested!" Ethan declared, slamming his hand onto the podium. "Grace is currently suffering from medical complications related to her high-risk pregnancy! She was manipulated by Pierce Global’s legal team while I was out of town on—"
A collective gasp swept through the crowd of journalists.
Ethan froze. The reporters were no longer looking at him. They were turning their cameras toward the street.
Three dark Lincoln Navigators pulled up to the curb directly in front of the steps.
The lead vehicle’s door opened, and four broad-shouldered security officers stepped out, creating an immediate, impassable cordon along the stone stairs.
Then the middle vehicle’s door opened.
Declan Pierce stepped out first. Tall, commanding, perfectly tailored, he adjusted his cuffs and turned back toward the open door, extending his hand.
Grace placed her gloved hand in his and stepped gracefully onto the sidewalk.
The flashbulbs erupted like a thunderstorm of blinding white light.
"Mrs. Calloway! Over here!"
"Grace! Is it true you're divorcing Ethan?"
"Mr. Pierce! Did you orchestrate the debt acquisition to force a merger?"
Grace did not look down. She did not hide her face. She walked up the stone steps beside Declan, her posture straight, her head held high, her emerald dress highlighting the magnificent curve of her pregnancy.
Ethan’s mouth hung open as she reached the top of the stairs, stopping five feet from his podium.
"Grace..." Ethan stammered, his bravado instantly evaporating. "What are you doing? Get inside, the press is—"
Grace walked right up to the microphone cluster. The crowd of reporters fell completely silent, sensing a historic moment of corporate drama.
Grace adjusted the center microphone slightly. Her voice cut through the cold morning air, crisp, clear, and utterly terrifying in its calm authority.
"My name is Grace Vance," she began, using her maiden name for the first time in four years. "I am the daughter of Arthur Vance, the founder of Vance Maritime Assets. And I am here to clarify three facts for the shareholders of Calloway Logistics."
Ethan took a step toward her. "Grace, stop this right now—"
Marcus stepped into Ethan’s path like an iron wall, forcing him back.
Grace didn't even turn around.
"First," Grace continued into the microphones, "I am not under duress. My mental health is exceptional, and my pregnancy is progressing beautifully."
A whisper of chuckles ran through the journalists.
"Second," she said, her green eyes locking onto Vanessa Reed, who shrank back behind the podium, "my husband was not on a business trip. He was at the Halcyon Crown Resort with his Vice President of Communications, using company funds to pay for a twelve-thousand-dollar-a-night ocean villa."
The reporters gasped, keying furiously into their phones and tablets.
"And third," Grace said, picking up a heavy white envelope from Declan’s assistant and placing it directly onto Ethan’s podium, "the board meeting at eleven o'clock is no longer necessary. As of nine-fifteen this morning, Pierce Global and Vance Maritime have exercised their combined seventy-four percent majority voting share. Ethan Calloway has been officially removed as Chief Executive Officer of this company."
Silence fell over State Street.
Ethan stared at the white envelope as if it were a venomous snake. "You... you can't fire me. I built this company!"
May you like
"My father built this company, Ethan," Grace said softly, stepping back from the microphone. "You just rented his desk."
She turned toward the revolving glass doors of Calloway Tower. Declan opened the door for her, stepping inside at her side as the doors of the empire closed behind them, leaving Ethan screaming curses into a wall of flashing cameras.
