Chapter 9 - The Harbor Light

The snow was falling in blinding sheets across Boston when the three-car convoy arrived at Massachusetts General Hospital.
Declan had coordinated everything weeks in advance. The entire private maternity wing on the eighth floor had been secured by Pierce Global’s medical logistics team. Top obstetricians, private nurses, and immediate security cordons were already in place before the car even pulled into the heated underground bay.
For six hours, Declan stayed in the delivery room.
He didn't leave her side for a single second. He held Grace’s hand through every contraction, letting her crush his fingers as the pain crested. He wiped the cool sweat from her forehead with a warm towel, whispering steady, low words of strength into her ear when she felt exhausted.
"You're doing magnificent, Grace," Declan whispered, his face inches from hers as she breathed through a brutal rush of pain. "Just a little more. You are your father's daughter. You are an iron wall."
At four-twenty in the morning, as the first pale blue light of dawn broke over the icy Atlantic harbor outside the window, a loud, clear, furious cry rang out through the delivery room.
The lead obstetrician smiled, lifting a beautiful, healthy baby girl into the warm light.
"Four-twenty A.M.," the doctor announced. "Seven pounds, four ounces. Perfect health."
Grace collapsed back against the pillows, her breath coming in heavy, joyful gasps, tears streaming freely down her face.
The nurse quickly swaddled the baby in a warm pink blanket and laid her gently onto Grace’s chest.
Grace looked down at her daughter. The baby had a tuft of golden-blonde hair, tiny rose-pink fingers, and wide, bright green eyes that looked up at her mother with absolute trust.
"Hello, my darling," Grace whispered, her voice cracking with pure love. "Hello, Clara."
Clara. Named after her grandmother.
Declan stood by the side of the bed, staring down at the tiny baby on Grace’s chest. The man who had faced down Wall Street titans and ruthless corporate raiders looked completely undone, his gray eyes shining with unshed tears, his chest heaving with overwhelming emotion.
Grace looked up at him, extending her hand. "Declan... come here."
Declan stepped closer, taking her hand, leaning over the bed.
Grace carefully adjusted the blanket, letting tiny Clara’s fingers brush against Declan’s broad thumb. The newborn baby instantly curled her tiny hand around his finger, holding on with surprising strength.
Declan let out a soft, shuddering breath, a tear finally escaping his eye and tracing down his cheek.
"She’s perfect, Grace," Declan whispered, his voice thick with devotion. "She’s absolute perfection."
"She’s safe," Grace said softly, looking at his hand holding her daughter's tiny fingers. "Because of you."
May you like
Declan leaned down, pressing a long, tender kiss to Grace’s forehead, then gently kissing the top of Clara’s golden head.
"I will protect her with my life, Grace," Declan promised, his voice an unbreakable vow echoing in the quiet room. "I will protect you both forever."
