Chapter 6 - The Audio File

Daniel’s hand hovered two inches above his vibrating phone.

"What did she send?" Daniel asked, his voice rasping.

Melissa pulled a tablet from under her arm and pressed the screen. "An hour before the board meeting convened, Claire’s legal counsel submitted a digital evidence folder. It included bank statements, property deeds... and a single audio recording taken five days ago."

She tapped the play icon on the tablet screen.

A crisp, high-definition audio recording began to play through the tablet speakers.

Female Voice (Ashley): "Daniel, what if Claire finds out about the condo in San Francisco? What if she asks where the money came from?"

Male Voice (Daniel): "Claire doesn't look at the corporate accounts, Ashley. She thinks she's a stay-at-home mom living off my generosity. She doesn't have the brains or the drive to understand corporate financial structures. I have my accounting firm mask the transfers under software licensing overhead. By the time we go public next year, I'll have pushed her out of the equity pool completely. She’ll get a small house in the divorce and a monthly check, and she’ll be grateful for it."

Female Voice (Ashley): "And the baby? What about our son?"

Male Voice (Daniel): "He’ll have everything, Ashley. I’m building an empire for us. Claire was just the stepping stone I used to get the initial capital. Her father's money started this, but I’m the one who made it valuable. She served her purpose."

CLICK.

The audio recording stopped.

The silence in the executive office was so absolute that the low hum of the air conditioning sounded like a roaring turbine.

The two corporate security guards standing in the doorway looked at Daniel not with professional detachment, but with pure, unadulterated disgust.

Daniel sat down heavily in his leather executive chair. His skin had turned a sickly, gray ash color.

He realized in that single, horrifying moment why the board had acted with such absolute, brutal swiftness. It wasn't just a financial dispute; it was a total moral destruction of his leadership. Claire hadn't merely presented legal facts; she had exposed his arrogance, his cruelty, and his criminal intent in his own voice.

"That... that recording was illegally obtained," Daniel whispered, his voice cracking. "California is a two-party consent state! That recording is inadmissible in court!"

"It wasn't recorded in California, sir," Melissa noted dryly. "The metadata shows it was recorded in the lobby lounge of the Four Seasons in Las Vegas during your business trip last month. Nevada is a one-party consent state."

Daniel covered his face with both hands, letting out a low, pathetic groan.

Claire had tracked him. She had calculated every single legal jurisdiction, every financial technicality, and every state law before striking. She hadn't reacted out of blind emotional rage; she had executed a corporate takeover with the cold, flawless precision of a master surgeon.

"Mr. Mercer," the lead security officer stepped forward, tapping his hand against his belt. "We need you to clear your personal items from the desk, hand over your building access badge, and step into the elevator. Right now."

Daniel looked up slowly. "I need to grab my coat—"

"Leave the coat, sir," the guard said sternly. "We'll pack your personal desk items and ship them to your home address. Walk."
