Chapter 7 - The Collapse

By 1:00 p.m. that afternoon, news of Daniel Mercer’s sudden suspension swept through Silicon Valley like a shockwave.
TechCrunch published a breaking news alert: MERCER TECHNOLOGIES CEO DANIEL MERCER SUSPENDED AMID FINANCIAL FRAUD INVESTIGATION; CO-FOUNDER CLAIRE MERCER ASSUMES EXECUTIVE BOARD CONTROL.
The company’s private valuation dropped fifteen percent in secondary market trading within two hours.
Daniel sat in the living room of the waterfront condo in downtown San Francisco—the very condo he had illegally purchased for Ashley Reed using $2.4 million of corporate funds.
The luxury living room was filled with expensive contemporary furniture, but the atmosphere was suffocating.
Ashley sat on the leather sofa across from him, crying hysterically, clutching her pregnant stomach while her mother stood nearby in the kitchen, frantically searching online news articles on her phone.
"Daniel! What is happening?!" Ashley sobbed, her face red and blotchy. "My lawyer just called me! He said the board of Mercer Technologies has filed an emergency injunction freezing Apex Horizon LLC’s bank accounts! They've put a legal lien on this condo!"
"Shut up, Ashley!" Daniel snapped, sitting at the dining table with three bottles of beer in front of him, his necktie loosened, his hair messy. "Just shut up for one minute!"
"Don't you talk to her like that!" Ashley’s mother yelled, marching out of the kitchen. "She’s seven months pregnant with your child! You told us you were a billionaire! You told us you controlled everything!"
"I DID control everything!" Daniel screamed, slamming his fist onto the glass table, shattering one of the empty beer bottles. "Until that bitch ruined everything!"
His cell phone vibrated violently against the table.
He snatched it up, hoping it was his primary corporate attorney, David Miller.
Instead, it was a call from his personal banking manager at Northern Trust Private Wealth.
"Daniel," the bank manager’s voice came through, cold and formal. "I am calling to inform you that pursuant to a temporary freeze order issued by San Mateo County Superior Court in Case #2026-CV-88412 (Mercer v. Mercer), your joint personal accounts, private lines of credit, and investment liquidity facilities have been restricted."
Daniel felt his heart hammer against his ribs like a trapped bird. "Restricted?! What does that mean?!"
"It means, Mr. Mercer," the banker replied, "that your personal credit cards are deactivated, and you are restricted to a court-approved living allowance of $2,500 per month until the community asset division and corporate fraud claims are adjudicated."
"TWO THOUSAND FIVE HUNDRED DOLLARS?!" Daniel shrieked. "My mortgage on Atherton alone is thirty thousand a month! The maintenance fee on this condo is four thousand!"
"I suggest you contact your family law counsel immediately, Mr. Mercer," the banker said dryly before hanging up.
Daniel dropped the phone onto the table.
He looked around the sparkling, luxurious San Francisco condo. The Italian marble counters, the floor-to-ceiling windows looking out over the Bay Bridge, the designer baby nursery that had just been painted last week in pale yellow.
