Chapter 6 - The Quiet Removal

On Friday morning, twenty-four hours before the country club gala, I took steps to secure my home and protect the people I loved.

I arranged for a private medical transport team to quietly relocate my mother to a high-security private recovery estate I owned in the Texas Hill Country—a gated property surrounded by twenty-four-hour armed guards and top-tier medical staff.

Grace and her son, Marcus, were escorted to the same estate, ensuring they were completely safe from any retaliation.

Before she left, my mother took my hand in her thin, fragile grip.

“Adrienne,” she whispered, her gray eyes clear and filled with maternal concern. “Be careful. Vanessa is desperate.”

“She’s cornered, Mom,” I said, kissing her forehead. “And cornered animals make mistakes. Rest now. When you come back to the house, everything will be clean.”

Once they were safely en route, I returned to the Austin estate.

Vanessa was sitting by the pool, sipping a mimosa, wearing large designer sunglasses and a silk robe. She looked completely relaxed, entirely unaware that the world beneath her feet had already begun to crumble.

When she saw me walk onto the patio, she adjusted her posture and gave me a sweet, practiced smile.

“Good morning, darling,” she purred, setting her glass down. “How is your mother doing today? I tried to go up to her room, but the doors were locked.”

“I moved her to a specialist clinic in Houston this morning, Vanessa,” I lied smoothly, sitting down across from her. “For advanced cardiac monitoring.”

Vanessa’s smile flickered with a brief flash of relief. “Oh, darling... that’s probably for the best. She needs professional care. A big house like this is just too stressful for an elderly woman.”

She reached across the table to lay her hand over mine.

“And what about the housekeeper?” Vanessa asked softly. “Did you handle her?”

“Grace has been placed on administrative leave,” I said, maintaining absolute composure.

Vanessa leaned back, a triumphant, cruel spark dancing in her eyes. “Good. You see? I told you she was no good for this family. Now we can focus on our big night tomorrow.”

“Our big night?” I echoed.

“My father’s development gala!” Vanessa exclaimed, her voice dripping with excitement. “Everyone who matters in Texas will be there, Adrienne. My father is going to announce our wedding details on stage, and your corporate team is going to finalize the development partnership!”

“It will certainly be an unforgettable evening, Vanessa,” I said softly.

Vanessa laughed, raising her glass of mimosa. “To our future, darling. To everything we’re going to build together.”

May you like

I looked at the amber liquid in her glass, remembering the three droplets of poison she had dripped into my mother’s medicine.

“To the future, Vanessa,” I replied. “May everyone get exactly what they deserve.”
