Chapter 8 - The Thirty-Foot Truth

The ballroom fell quiet, a few light chuckles rippling through the crowd at my sudden interruption.
Vanessa looked at me, a brief flicker of confusion crossing her eyes. “Adrienne? What are you doing?”
I looked out over the three hundred faces staring up at the stage.
“Good evening, ladies and gentlemen,” I said, my voice projecting clearly through the high-end sound system. “Richard is correct about one thing. Tonight is about family. It’s about truth. And it’s about protection.”
Richard frowned, stepping closer. “Adrienne, what is this? This isn't the script—”
“Before we discuss corporate credit lines and real estate mergers,” I continued, ignoring him completely, “I want to share a brief video with all of you. A glimpse into the private life of the woman I was scheduled to marry three weeks from now.”
I pointed my hand toward the massive thirty-foot LED screen on the main wall.
“Roll it,” I said into my lapel mic.
Instantly, the promotional slideshow vanished.
The thirty-foot screen flickered, and then brightened into crystal-clear, 4K high-definition video.
The room gasped as the interior of my mother’s master suite filled the massive screen. The audio turned on, crystal clear, echoing off the high ceiling of the ballroom.
The screen displayed Vanessa Sterling walking into Eleanor’s room.
“Where is it?” Vanessa’s voice boomed through the country club speakers. “Don't play dumb with me, Eleanor! Your lawyer was here yesterday... What did you sign?”
Vanessa’s face on stage turned instantly, violently white. Her hand released mine as if she had been struck by lightning.
“Turn it off!” Richard screamed, rushing toward the AV desk. “Turn it off right now!”
Two of my security guards stepped into Richard’s path, holding him firmly in place.
On the screen, the horrifying footage continued.
The crowd watched in absolute, paralyzed horror as Vanessa shoved the elderly housekeeper, picked up the steaming bowl of tomato soup, and tipped it deliberately toward Eleanor’s face.
Screams of shock echoed through the ballroom as the video showed Grace Bennett throwing her own body forward to shield my mother, her arm blistering under the boiling soup while Vanessa stood over them, smiling coldly before smearing soup on her own clothes and screaming for help.
“My God...” a woman in the front row gasped, covering her face.
“Is that real?” a prominent city investor whispered in horror.
Vanessa stood on the stage, paralyzed, her eyes wide with unutterable terror as three hundred of her family’s closest peers watched her true nature laid bare on a thirty-foot canvas.
“Wait,” I said into the microphone. “There’s more.”
The video cut to the second file.
The screen displayed the lower kitchen from two months ago. The crowd watched as Vanessa pulled a glass vial from her purse and dropped three clear droplets of Digitalis Extract poison into my recovering mother’s daily cardiac medication bottle.
A collective roar of disgust and rage erupted from the crowd.
“You poisoned her?” Richard gasped, spinning around to look at his daughter in horror. “Vanessa... what did you do?!”
Vanessa couldn't speak. Her lips moved, but no sound came out. She looked at the cameras, at the horrified faces of her friends, at the media crews who were filming every second of her public execution.

I turned to face Vanessa on the stage.
The ballroom fell into a suffocating, dead silence.
