Chapter 7 - The Gathering at the Country Club

Saturday evening arrived.

The Austin Country Club was a magnificent limestone mansion overlooking Lake Austin, lit up in golden floodlights for the annual Sterling Development Gala.

Over three hundred high-society guests—real estate moguls, private equity directors, politicians, and socialites—filled the grand ballroom. Crystal chandeliers glittered above tables dressed in black silk and white roses.

Among the guests were dozens of people who had received invitations to my upcoming wedding with Vanessa.

I arrived at 8:00 PM, wearing a bespoke black tuxedo. Beside me walked Arthur Pendelton and my lead security director, Miller.

As soon as I entered the hall, Richard Sterling—a heavy-set, silver-haired man in a seventy-thousand-dollar tuxedo—marched over with a booming laugh, clutching a glass of scotch.

“Adrienne! My boy!” Richard roared, clapping a heavy hand onto my shoulder. “Look at this crowd! Tonight is the night we show Texas what the Sterling and Cross names can do together!”

“Good evening, Richard,” I said politely, slipping his hand off my shoulder. “Where is Vanessa?”

“Over by the stage, holding court with the press,” Richard grinned, leaning in close to whisper. “The press is buzzing about your wedding announcement tonight. My media team has three camera crews ready. When I call you two on stage, we’ll announce the corporate credit line backing my downtown tower!”

“I’m sure the press will find it very educational, Richard,” I said smoothly.

I walked toward the stage area.

Vanessa stood surrounded by five high-society women, showing off her six-carat diamond engagement ring—a ring I had paid eight hundred thousand dollars for. She wore a stunning floor-length emerald green gown, her hair styled in a flawless, regal updo.

When she saw me, her face lit up. She broke away from her group and glided over, wrapping her arm around mine.

“You look handsome, darling,” she whispered, pressing a light kiss to my cheek. “Are you ready for your speech?”

“I’m completely ready, Vanessa,” I said, checking my watch.

It was 8:45 PM.

On the main wall of the ballroom hung a massive thirty-foot ultra-high-definition LED screen, currently displaying a looping slideshow of Sterling Development projects and promotional graphics.

My corporate tech team had already bypassed the venue’s local AV network, securing a direct, encrypted uplink to the main screen.

At 8:55 PM, Richard Sterling stepped up to the podium on the grand stage, tapping his microphone.

The room fell into an attentive silence as three hundred wealthy guests turned toward the stage.

“Ladies and gentlemen! Welcome!” Richard’s voice echoed powerfully through the ballroom speakers. “Tonight, we celebrate progress, vision, and family! But before we discuss our flagship downtown development tower, I want to invite two very special people to the stage—my brilliant daughter, Vanessa, and her fiancé, the visionary tech titan, Adrienne Cross!”

Applause broke out across the ballroom.

Vanessa gave me a radiant, triumphant smile, taking my arm as we walked up the carpeted stairs onto the stage.

She stood beside the podium, clutching my hand, her face glowing under the bright spotlights as camera flashes erupted across the crowd.

“Together,” Richard boomed into the microphone, “these two young people represent the future of Texas business! Tonight, I am proud to announce that Cross Technologies and Sterling Development are uniting to—”

“Excuse me, Richard,” I said calmly, stepping forward and taking the microphone directly out of his hand.
